Neil E. Hodges<p>Guess I'm now a member of the manual car transmission club. :3</p><p>My wife and I bought a used 2011 Ford Ranger XLT last night and I had to drive it home since my wife was too skittish with the transmission. It was a "trial by fire" for me since I'd never driven stick before, but we got home without any incidents aside from a small number of stalls.</p><p>It's kind of wild that even a "normal" car with stick feels better to drive than an automatic one. You don't need a sports car! Compared to automatic, the throttle feels much more "connected" to the wheels. The salesperson (who mainly drives stick) said it was the lack of the "torque converter bounce".</p><p>Just like when I learned to ride a motorcycle, there was a learning curve, but the rewards are so gratifying! :D Honestly, after getting the muscle memory from driving home, the only thing that really jumps out to me as being different is the behavior of the synchronizers.</p><p>For those who don't know, motorcycles most often use a sequential non-synchronous transmission, but some companies have automatic offerings now. Oh, and the vast majority of motorscooters use a CVT.</p><p><a href="https://f.kawa-kun.com/search?tag=ManualTransmission" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ManualTransmission</span></a> <a href="https://f.kawa-kun.com/search?tag=StickShift" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StickShift</span></a></p>

Chris Leboe<p>Do you like Land Cruisers? Do you wear t-shirts? I added some options for the iconic 4 and 5 spd shifter patterns for Toyota Land Cruisers. The font for the numbers is unknown to me so I created it using my best guesses and tweaks along the way. Phone cases also available but I have not tried or used them. </p><p><a href="https://cottonbureau.com/people/chris-leboe" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cottonbureau.com/people/chris-</span><span class="invisible">leboe</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/landcruiser" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landcruiser</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/toyota" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>toyota</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/toyotalandcruiser" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>toyotalandcruiser</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/manualtransmission" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>manualtransmission</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/manual" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>manual</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/5spd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>5spd</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/4spd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>4spd</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/tshirt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tshirt</span></a></p>
Dave Rahardja<p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Car" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Car</span></a> Nerd Time!</p><p>If you drive a <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/manualTransmission" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>manualTransmission</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/car" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>car</span></a> you owe it to yourself to learn the “open palm” technique to eliminate missed shifts, especially during high-performance track driving.</p><p>The secret to never missing a shift is to NOT GRIP the shifter. If you do, bumps and jostles will easily shift the lever into the wrong position. Keep your palm open and relaxed, and be sure to apply forces ONLY in the directions that result in a proper shift.</p><p>The open palm technique involves positioning your hand in various orientations and contacting the shifter only in certain locations that always result in the correct gear selection. After some practice, this will become so natural and subtle that you’d be able to do it without a thought.</p><p>Here’s what I mean. For these examples, I assume you’re driving a left-hand-drive car (e.g. US) so you’re using your right hand to shift. I also assume a standard H pattern, not a dogleg.</p>
