I wrote a similar blog post a few years ago. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one no longer fooled by #Etsy hype. Etsy is not a site for handmade goods anymore. It's a site for mass-produced, mostly imported crap. It is designed to squeeze every penny it possibly can out of the people who sell there. You can better support #artists and #makers by buying directly from them on their sites and not through Etsy.

Why I Don't Sell on Etsy - Dana's Art Corner danasartcorner.com/why-i-dont-

danasartcorner.comWhy I Don't Sell on EtsyYou’d think that me, as a small handmade artist, would be clamoring to get onto the Etsy train, right? Well, that might have been true [...]

I never really understood why we have to believe an artist is a good role model.

Perhaps it's because so many of the #music #makers I like were horrible people that I was disillusioned at an early age.

#jamesbrown #rickjames and #miledavis to mention a few.

No one expects their builder or plumber to be a good person let alone a role model.

These people are marked by their skill, not by their moral insight.

I think it might just be time we left the delusion and started looking at the real world.

The real world where some horrible #humans are nonetheless gifted with extraordinary #abilities.

That's how it's always been. It's unlikely to change.

I make & sell dummy battery things since needing one in the lab myself. I conceived the little assembly of 3D printing and wire that lets you do in-situ current measurement or power injection in the tiny space where coin cells live.

Hobbyists, #makers, labs, #retrogaming and #retrocomputing nerds found them and send me orders which I grudgingly fill for a tiny fraction of minimum wage. The version shown here lets you relocate the battery outside a hard-to-access cabinet for easy changes.

The #GatherFiberSymposium got noticed by the local media! We were psyched that they invited our lace group in to their month of fiber art celebrations. There are a ton of great events going on.

More details from The Boston Globe (or search archive.youknow for an unpaywalled version).

The Boston Globe · Gather 2025 explores fiber arts in Greater BostonBy Cate McQuaid

Trying to resist binge watching Hannah Fry's Modern Devices show on BBC2 via iPlayer. I can highly recommend it if you are into taking things apart to see how they work.

Basically each episode she picks an appliance or thing (air fryer, smart card, fridge etc) and takes it apart and looks at the history and technology of the interesting parts.

Rivas has long maintained some safeguard from the seasonality of weddings and demand for gowns. Her fashion interests are broad and her skills wide-ranging. In fall and winter she sells coats she has designed, and throughout the year she makes shawls.

And in addition to being hired by schools or community education programs, Rivas opens her workshop weekly to children who want to learn to sew and develop their own projects.

“They can learn to sew in one day. In two hours, they’re going to be able to know how to use the machine,” Rivas said. “It’s like a sport. You can play basketball right away, but the more you do it, the better you become.”
