Mika<p>I love how <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Linode" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Linode</a>/<a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Akamai" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Akamai</a> walks you through creating an account, verifying your phone number, gets your personal address, verifies your credit card... then dumps your ass with this:</p><blockquote>Your recently created account has been denied activation due to activity or patterns associated with fraudulent behavior</blockquote>Bitches. Now, what's an affordable/competitively-priced <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/VPS" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#VPS</a> option that allows you to pick which region/country the server is hosting from, and includes Japan?<p></p>

Natanael Copa<p>Parts of the Alpine Linux infra (CI) has been unreliable recently. Jonathan Kamens 86 47<p>For the record:<br>* They emailed me the same request again on January 1, 2025. I once again told them to pound sand.<br>* This morning they escalated by filing a <a href="https://federate.social/tags/DMCA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DMCA</span></a> takedown request with <a href="https://federate.social/tags/Linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linode</span></a>, my hosting provider. Email addresses can't be copyrighted, so the request is totally bogus. Linode forwarded it to me and demanded that I take action rather than reading it carefully enough to determine that it's bogus. I just wrote back to them and told them it is. We'll see what happens.<br><a href="https://federate.social/tags/Comcast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Comcast</span></a></p>

Noah<p>Day 1 of running my own <a href="https://10base2.dev/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a> instance has come and gone and so far so good. </p><p>Having access to everything under the hood, it's interesting watching the gears turn and the software work. Most interesting for me is seeing how much space is eaten up by media files that get shared out. </p><p>Obviously I only have a single day to base things off but day 1 ate up around 16 GB of storage. Thankfully all my media is pointing to <a href="https://10base2.dev/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a> object storage so at least the storage is cheap. But it was definitely interesting to see how much space gets eaten up. </p><p>So far the initial hurdles have been around tuning <a href="https://10base2.dev/tags/elasticsearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>elasticsearch</span></a> so it continues indexing at a reasonable pace without eating the server alive, and around starting to establish maintenance jobs that I can schedule as crontabs so the server can stay afloat while my life continues to be the busy thing that it is. </p><p>I'd definitely take suggestions from folks who are either running their own instances or have done so in the past. I've got <a href="https://10base2.dev/tags/postgresql" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>postgresql</span></a> backups automated (both the creation and cleanup of) with PgAgent. Also running "rake mastodon:media:clear" as a nightly cronjob to periodically remove uploads that have not been attached to any status after a while, but that's kind of it. </p><p>While it's not at all my first rodeo with the care and feeding of a server, it is indeed my first rodeo running my own Mastodon instance so I'd happily take any articles folks have that they found helpful or just general advice if you have time to share.</p>
Mitex Leo<p>I want to stop using Linode Object Storage. So far I've tried multiple times and failed to configure Blackblaze B2. Mitex Leo<p>After a lot of trial and error, I finally got object storage configured for this instance. I had originally planned to use Backblaze, but ended up going with Linode Object Storage. Unfortunately, the guides I found online didn't work for me, and I also had to make the switch from Caddy to Nginx. I'm thinking about writing a blog post to share my experience.</p><p><a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/mastoadmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mastoadmin</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/fedimin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fedimin</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/fediadmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediadmin</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/s3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>s3</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/backblaze" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>backblaze</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/nginx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nginx</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/caddyserver" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>caddyserver</span></a> <a href="https://mitexleo.one/tags/mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mastodon</span></a></p>
Wayne Dixon<p>I'm not super irritated by this, but it is quite inconvenient for those who card gets automatically charged. Maybe it's just me, but <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a> should have probably paused charging cards until it is rectified, but maybe that's just my own thinking. I’m not sure how many people it affects, nor how many get automatically charged, but it's just a thought.</p>
Wayne Dixon<p>I was going to post about how I strangely got charged for overages on my virtual servers... I didn't get charged that much ($0.31), but it would be VERY strange for me to go over my allotment of 5TB.</p><p>I can easily get over 1TB at home, and even up to 2.25 TB some months. But for those months I'm downloading huge game updates. There is NO way that my 2 servers could go through 5TB of data. If you use <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a>, you might see overage charges. Mitex Leo<p>Here's my review of the cloud providers:</p><p>1. AWS: Overall solid, but has a UI that's like navigating a maze with one hand tied behind your back. Why isn't IPv6 on EC2 just a default thing? </p><p>2. IBM Cloud: Absolute chaos. Had a lovely phone call with customer support for half an hour yesterday (and by lovely, I mean painful). They asked for my NID, proof of life, and possibly a blood sample. Finally, they approved my account and let me add my card. Today, I tried to grab a free HP VPS, but who knows if it's activated or lost in the ether?</p><p>3. Azure: Fancy, but pricey! Tried to sign up and got the "down for maintenance" screen instead. Great timing, right?</p><p>4. Linode: Didn't even get past the door. Account canceled for fraudulent activities, but verified my payment method. Sent an email to support, but apparently, their support is on vacation.</p><p>5. DigitalOcean: Slightly more expensive than Linode, and didn’t like my Virtual Debit Card (even though it's legit and under my name). </p><p>6. Vultr: Onboarding was a breeze! But they hit me with a minimum deposit of $5 to activate my account. Sneaky.</p><p>7. Google Cloud: Gave it a shot even though I’m not a Google fan, but it's pricier than AWS. The search continues!</p><p>Note: I was only playing around with VPS and Cloud Compute (EC2), and it was quite the adventure!</p><p>Edit: Linode activated my account today. Although they're yet to respond to my email. Akamai ruined it. </p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/cloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cloud</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/aws" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>aws</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/ibmcloud" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ibmcloud</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/gcp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gcp</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>google</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/vultr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vultr</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/DigitalOcean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalOcean</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linode</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Azure" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Azure</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/hosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hosting</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/akamai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>akamai</span></a></p>
