Richard MacManus<p>Three Hollywood movies were released in 1995 with internet themes: the Keanu Reeves cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic (with an accompanying website), The Net with Sandra Bullock, and Hackers. As well as these 3 films, I look back at William Gibson's now extinct mid-90s website, "William Gibson’s Yardshow", and the equally lost to time Johnny Mnemonic net.hunt, an online scavenger hunt. <a href="https://cybercultural.com/p/cyberspace-movies-1995/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cybercultural.com/p/cyberspace</span><span class="invisible">-movies-1995/</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InternetHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternetHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/90smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90smovies</span></a></p>

So I have updated my post accordingly: <a href="https://cybercultural.com/p/iuma-1994/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">cybercultural.com/p/iuma-1994/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Thanks David, what a treasure those '94 images are. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InternetHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternetHistory</span></a></p>

Richard MacManus<p>This week's look back at <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InternetHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternetHistory</span></a> is again about 1994, and what I think was the world's first multimedia website: the Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA). I tried my best to get some screenshots of IUMA from 1994, even though none appear to exist! I used somewhat blurry images from old YouTube videos and computer magazines. If anyone happens to have, or know of, a 1994 screenshot of IUMA, do let me know and I'll add it to the post. <a href="https://cybercultural.com/p/iuma-1994/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">cybercultural.com/p/iuma-1994/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Richard MacManus<p>I wrote in a previous post that 2012 was the year that Web 2.0 quietly died...but it was also when a new kind of internet was born: a more mobile and visual one, with images and videos leading the way. Take a trip with me back to 2012, when YouTube "creators" started to be more popular than mere bloggers, when Facebook acquired Instagram, when Pinterest was a fast-growing social network, and when "picture subreddits" were all the rage. <a href="https://cybercultural.com/p/internet-2012/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cybercultural.com/p/internet-2</span><span class="invisible">012/</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InternetHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternetHistory</span></a></p>

Richard MacManus<p>One of my all-time favorite artists is Lana Del Rey, and in this week's Cybercultural I chronicle her breakthrough year of 2011 — and how YouTube and social media were pivotal to her rise. 2011 was when Lana achieved "internet fame", which eventually led to a far greater level of fame. <a href="https://cybercultural.com/p/lana-del-rey-youtube-2011/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cybercultural.com/p/lana-del-r</span><span class="invisible">ey-youtube-2011/</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InternetHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternetHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LanaDelRey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LanaDelRey</span></a></p>
Richard MacManus<p>David Bowie, Prince and Peter Gabriel all had interactive CD-ROMs out in 1994, and had plans for further multimedia projects. But by the end of the year, the CD-ROM format was effectively over. And let's not forget Cybermania '94, the Oscars of multimedia! <a href="https://cybercultural.com/p/cd-roms-1994/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cybercultural.com/p/cd-roms-19</span><span class="invisible">94/</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InternetHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InternetHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bowie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bowie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Prince" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Prince</span></a></p>
