Viceroy Butterfly
Alameda Open Space, NM
I saw one of these fluttering around my yard yesterday afternoon. I was busy tending the irrigation so didn't get a photo. Here's a nice one I took years ago.

#GutenMorgen Fediland.
Diese Hummel war am Montag bei 3°C unterwegs.
Inzwischen kann sie den Pelz zumindest tagsüber auch zu Hause lassen.
Habt einen schönen #Samstag.

Mr Spock would have said ‘fascinating’! I said the same thing yesterday in the forest! What a marvellous creature of nature!

American Lady #butterfly (Vanessa virginiensis) visiting our neighbor's butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii). https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/239994761
Their larvae feed on pussytoes / Antennaria, so I'm hoping that planting pussytoes in my garden will help attract more of them and support them in their full life cycle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_lady
An intrepid Huron Sachem, no doubt on a quest of some sort.
Apparently, #Atalopedes huron and A. campestris used to be conspecific, but were recently found to be distinct species, so it's hard to find info on this newly separated species: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atalopedes_campestris
Dragonflies are supreme predators, catching and eating several hundred insects each day, many of which would otherwise annoy you.
They indicate a relatively healthy habitat that can produce enough prey individuals. This one is in area where there are clean quiet waters for their young, surrounded by a protected maritime forest. Easy Street.

Found this ENORMOUS grapevine beetle (_Pelidnota punctata_) on plants in someone's yard on my way to the grocery store yesterday!! I didn't even know beetles got this big here.
Good morning, have a good weekend everyone!
Habt alle ein schönes Wochenende!
A very normal looking thorn, nothing to see here, move along.

A glittery bi-colored striped sweat bee visiting a purple cone flower.
These bees live in communal ground burrows, I see them peeking out as they come and go. Quite charming.
This beautiful creature has taken up temporary residence in one of our shrubs (very well camouflaged!). Female emperor I reckon.
We get quite a few dragonflies passing through - a broad-bodied chaser yesterday - though no water nearby that I know of (besides the bird bath!)
Exactly how loud are the #cicadas this year?
Well... I haven't seen or heard many at all near me in #AuroraIllinois, myself. But sections of the #Chicago suburbs are already seeing-- and hearing!-- a lot of them.
One Facebook friend in #Warrenville #Illinois posted this image of her SmartWatch, which was taking a sound measurement of the ones near her. (She has the red-eyed 17-year brood in her yard.)
Another commenter in northern Illinois said that it's as loud as if they're attending a rock concert.

After thunderstorms and almost biblical downpours I got outside for a bimble near my gîte. So much wildlife here. Saw red-backed shrike, cirl buntings, and heard a number of warblers, cuckoos and turtle doves! No pics but I did manage to photograph insects (and flowers).
One of the most beautiful butterflies is the Eastern (Canadian) Tiger Swallowtail or Papilio glaucus. The male flaunts yellow and black stripes like that of a tiger, is very large and colorful and has a wingspan of 3 - 5 inches. This one was enjoying the Lilacs in my backyard in Guelph Ontario Canada.
