@delta also the whole "BuT #mEtAdAtA?" Discussion is completely blown out of proportions by #Signal fanboys.

In fact, I'm convinced someone already made a #delta #chat #server as an #OnionService over @torproject / #Tor just for the lulz.

  • The biggest Advantage for Delta Chat is that it doesn't require yet another server but instead just uses #IMAP + #SMTP and can even be integrated in #corporate communications that require #archival and #indexing by merely feeding the private keys to said #eMail archival software [i.e. #benno #MailArchiv], which makes it possible to comply with regulations like #GoBD & #HGB where applicable.

Not that this is something the average user encounters, but it is a big bonus for larger organizations!

If the Google "site:" operator shows you a URL is indexed and Google Search Console does not say it is indexed, the URL is indexed. And if you're concerned the URL may not appear in queries - just search for it.

Search engines are constantly dumping perfectly good content from their indexes. They come back, recrawl it, and re-index it.

And Search Console's data often runs behind reality.

The proof is in the query.

Here's an excellent tip if you search for files on your computer a lot:

"Everything" from Voidtools. I discovered it a few years ago, and I use it all the time, every day. Indexing is superfast (as in a few seconds), and completely non-intrusive. And it locates your files instantly.

You can search for file content as well. Content is not indexed, but it's still pretty instant if I have a few thousand .syx files and need to locate the marimbas.

Mastodon 4.2 release will be a major milestone for all of fedi. When the biggest server flavor enables toot search and settles on a privacy declaration to make it opt-in, that settles the argument on whether global search is okay here or not: it will be.

In the past year, a lot of projects to do this exact thing have been killed and people banished for it, but that's the price for spearheading change.

However, no Mastodon server sees enough of fedi to actually provide global search - not even mastodon.social, and certainly not whichever site you are registered on. They can only index the part they see, after all.

So, the next step on this path is a global search service provider subscribing to ALL servers (modulo moderation). Running one will be a very expensive operation, though - funded either by ads, or by (server admin?) subscription.

Would you pay to have access to global fedi search?

How can we boost the odds of deterring or identifying research #misconduct?

Among the suggestions here: #authors should openly share #data, #code, & #preprints. #Journals should require it. Indexing services should reward the journals that do.

To me, what's new & interesting here is going beyond authors & journals to #indexing & #abstracting #services to create incentives for journals to improve their policies.

FrontiersAn Improved Peer-Review System to Compensate for Scientific Misconduct in Health-Sensitive TopicsIn December 2021, one of the authors of the present paper (AR) took part in the peer review of the paper “Safety and immunogenicity of an inactivated virus particle vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, BIV1-CovIran: findings from double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, phase I and II clinical trials among healthy adults” for the BMJ Open1, 2. The manuscript described clinical phases I and II of the COVID-19 vaccine BIV1-CovIran by Shifa Pharmed Industrial Group. The article was accepted for publication in March 2021 after three review rounds, with a total of six reviewers involved. On May 2022, AR received an email from Yeganeh Torbati, a Washington Post reporter who was investigating the development of BIV1-CovIran. Torbati asked AR for a general opinion about the data presented in the above article. AR replied that no serious anomalies were highlighted, although he specified that the peer review process was too superficial to guarantee complete integrity. Subsequently, through an article published in the Washington Post in August 2022, Torbati disclosed serious misconduct dynamics3. In support of her claims, an official correction was published in the BMJ Open in November 2022, in which the authors were forced to admit various conflicts of interest and the occurrence of vaccine-related adverse effects1. The relevant fact is that not even six peer reviewers and one editor have discovered such a hidden scenario. This is not intended to blame the journal or the reviewers but only ...

I'm in the "no #indexing without consent" camp. That said, are there any add-ons, or feature proposals for Mastodon around full text indexing and #searching of ones own posts?

This seems like it would be easy for clients to do without involving servers at all.

No privacy issues if the index never leaves the device, only your posts.

Build keyword index associated with masto url link. Wouldn't even have to store the contents, as you could index-on-post.

Is this a thing in any of the clients?

Does your book need an #index?
Is the author the best person to do it?
Well, sometimes, but often not, for reasons of experience, skills, software, training and time.
So here’s an article I wrote for the Society of Authors: ‘Why you need and how to work with a book #indexer: a guide for #authors.’
Hope it helps!
