Ross of Ottawa<p>Getting rid of this old thing today. 1950s round receptacle in stunning brown. </p><p>It's for a sump pump - swapping in a modern one and with an energy monitoring zigbee device connected as well. Will be interested to know if and when the sump pump is being activated.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HomeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeReno</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HomeOwnership" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeOwnership</span></a></p>
Ross of Ottawa<p>I want to install a pushbutton timer for a bathroom fan, and a dimmer for a bedroom overhead light.</p><p>Digging into electrical boxes in our oldish house usually means a surprise or two, and the jobs tend to become unexpectedly larger. </p><p>Those following along may recall one ceiling box I changed that had 13 screws holding it in place. </p><p>So I tend to expect the unexpected now. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/homeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeReno</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/homeOwnership" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeOwnership</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a></p>
Ross of Ottawa<p>Yay, I did a thing today, so I haven't been totally useless. </p><p>A basement window has an outer screen that was inexplicably too large for its mounting channels so I disassembled its aluminum frame and shortened the top and bottom pcs by a cm, then reassembled and re-splined the screen. Success. </p><p>Don't feel as lazy about the long breakfast and wandering through antique shops today.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/homeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeReno</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/newHouse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>newHouse</span></a></p>
Ross of Ottawa<p>In the middle of the night, I thought up a technique for the problem of inserting short fibreglass <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/insulation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insulation</span></a> batts into a wall cavity containing many protruding nail tips.</p><p>Trying to stuff a batt in there just shreds and clumps it up, making it useless and a mess.</p><p>With two wide cedar shims you can make a fibreglass sandwich. The whole thing gets pushed deep into the cavity, then each shim pulled out leaving the fibreglass in place.</p><p>Success! An easy sol'n for the problem.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/homeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeReno</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a></p>
Natalie<p>Handypeoples, what is the most affordable but least shit method to protect a concrete floor? I will be ripping carpet up in our lounge so I can use it as a sewing room but I'm not sure of the best way to treat the concrete.</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/homereno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homereno</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/househaving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>househaving</span></a></p>
Ross of Ottawa<p>Yay, just finished the second installed attic-hatch build &amp; install. Number three is easy, hatch is fine, just needs insulation. Number four is more complex. Some sketching and thinking is required there. It's a large pull-down ladder hatch.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HomeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeReno</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/winterizing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>winterizing</span></a></p>

Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>This is not a place you ever want to be and not where I planned to be <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/today" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>today</span></a>. I was installing, or trying to, the bathroom vanity when I realized it needed bracing behind the wall. So I had to crawl into the small cubby hole in our bedroom closet to access the area behind the wall, dig out the insulation, and install some bracing. Sweaty, itchy, cramped, space. <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/pandemicBath" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pandemicBath</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/HomeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeReno</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/PortAlberni" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PortAlberni</span></a></p>

Ross of Ottawa<p>A multi-year long <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/plumbing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>plumbing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/procrastination" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>procrastination</span></a> on fixing a slow leak from a pipe (eg only a drop or two per day) was finally attempted on the weekend, and my fear that it was in too tangled and confined a spot to effectively fix was confirmed. </p><p>So this week I've put various projects on hold while I replace a large section of copper pipe to rectify and avoid further challenges.</p><p>Hopeful for a good outcome.<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/homeReno" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeReno</span></a></p>
