La hambruna se apoderaba de la población campesina y los impulsaba a emigrar a otros países supuestamente más prósperos (¿a qué nos suena esta historia?). En unas cinco décadas se calcula que emigraron a Estados Unidos unos ocho millones de irlandeses (casi el doble de la población actual de la República Irlandesa). La mayoría de ellos viajaban "con lo puesto" y con una enorme incertidumbre acerca de cómo iban a ser recibidos o qué tipo de trabajo iban a tener que aceptar. A eso hay que añadir una enorme tristeza en la partida, en un pueblo tan arraigado a la tierra y las costumbres como el irlandés.
