I only recently found out I can catch some DAZN matches for free (with login) so I’ve been watching a match here and there of leagues like the men’s Bundesliga (which I used to watch sparingly years ago and enjoyed).

I only found out today they have a different kind of promotion/relegation playoff format that I wish the English leagues adopted.

Instead of the bottom three teams getting an automatic relegation at the end of the season only the bottom two are automatically relegated, and the third-to-last team (16th place since they have 18 teams) faces off the Bundesliga 2 (second division/tier) third place team.

So the second tier doesn’t have a playoff between 3rd and 6th place like FA’s Championship or League One. Just a battle between an ambitious 3rd place team wanting promotion vs a struggling top division team that still has one more chance to keep its spot. What drama! 😅

That also feels more accurate a gauge for who can survive the top division than bringing in 4th to 6th place teams from the 2nd division.
