@toddalstrom

Could someone explain a hypothetical.

If Vance were to join mastodon by comparison, assuming a similar desire to block from user, how else might this play out based on the way that federation works within an Activity Pub context.

Just trying to understand the practical nature of the two protocols as applied to this case.

Maybe rather than talking about federating everything on the web, we need to talk about federating what, and how.

In an interview with Simon Vansintjan from Mirlo, he talks about anyone with an account on their platform can create a music blog. It would be great to be able to subscribe to one of those blogs via ActivityPub, and get a notification in nu fediverse account whenever they publish new post.

I love #Mastodon for so many reasons. But when it comes to race politics, whew boy. It's clear many still view yourselves as the default. It's like a stench. And POCs can smell it a mile away. That's why there aren't many here.

Mastodon is uniquely uniformed on race but is the most confident of the contrary. It's a dangerous mix. Race is our achilles heel. A small group of bad actors could tear this place apart in a weekend

This #federation will never survive unless we fix this

@itsfoss I believe one can make a #PeerTube server part of another server's #federation. PeerTube's federation feature, enabled by the #ActivityPub, allowing instances to display videos from other servers alongside their own content, so by creating for example a video.itsfoss.com server, offering a central point for #FOSS videos, you could become a go to server for this kind of videos, while people remain independent and you likely keep your bandwidth acceptable.

@alisynthesis If I was being deliberately arsey I'd suggest that China and North Korea are pretty good at this #intranet approach :) BUT, it's at least a basis. Back in olden times, the #Internet used to basically be a network of intranets and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) - I think that's why us old timey people who grew up that way hate the modern thing-we-have so much. I guess in a way #Federation is going back that way somewhat.

But I feel I should slightly defend #Cloudflare even though they didn't give me the policy job after FOURTEEN interviews and being told that the last one was just a formality.

They are not 100% faceless, they do at the very least have a lot of free plans for normal people and they have a lot of extra freebies for journalists and news organisations.

Bluesky does not federate correctly. As a consequence I cannot see the post he's referring to, and I cannot reply to him.

I don't like federating with BlueSky with a required app facilitating every interaction. It seems like a man-in-the-middle attack you agree to.

Mastodon is decentralised.

I have 45,465 followers on my single-person instance.

Of those, 13,180 are on mastodon.social.

So roughly 30% of my followers are on mastodon.social.

Also, I follow 11,392 people.

Of those, 1,864 are on mastodon.social.

If mastodon.social blocks my instance, I lose 30% of my followers and I’m forced to stop following 1,864 people.

So, not just Decentralized Social (DeSo), but instead —

Decentralized Social (DeSo), Federated Social (FeSo), Localized Social (LoSo)

The goal is 'social' that is simultaneously — 'Decentralized', 'Federated', and 'Localized', all at the same time.
