AP: At least 3 people dead, hundreds rescued after severe storms flood streets in South Texas

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Drenching rain along the Texas-Mexico border let up Friday, but rescues were still ongoing a day after severe storms trapped residents in their homes, forced drivers to abandon their vehicles on flooded roads and shut down an airport. At least three people died.

"Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are narrow, elongated regions of intense atmospheric moisture transport that are responsible for a large proportion of midlatitude extreme precipitation. [...] ARs will intensify due to warmer air’s ability to hold more moisture."

A team led by Brazilian researchers carried out a 70-day expedition around Antarctica to understand the melting rate of glacial ice and to see how the region is reacting to global warming.

The changes in the landscape that the researchers encountered were shocking, leading them to predict that Brazil’s climate will be increasingly affected by warming in Antarctica.

Mongabay Environmental News · Expedition links Antarctic glacial melting to climate catastrophe in BrazilIn a part of the world where throughout history only the pure white of snow and ice could be seen, today green moss and grass are emerging. Fish and penguins have begun to migrate south in search of colder regions. Even rain, an unthinkable phenomenon until recent times, now falls on this part of the […]

(We will have a severe problem much sooner me thinks - like in the coming 5-10 years - because of food insecurity, famines. Last year 40% global crop loss was calculated for 2025 due to weather disasters alone. There's no sense in calculating some imaginary GDP if there's nothing left to eat.)

"EPA said it is reconsidering the scientific finding that greenhouse gases are a danger to public health. This comes as research shows average global temperatures in 2024 likely rose above a 1.5 degree Celsius threshold that for years has been a red line for climate change."

Silencing climate scientists in the US will ulitimately fail, but it couldn't come at a worse time. We must rally around global efforts to maintain progress.

“We have the solutions – but what stops us is the disinformation campaigns and lobby power of the fossil fuel industry,” Rahmstorf added. “Ignoring reality, denying the laws of physics and silencing scientists can only lead to harm, and ordinary people will pay the price for that.”

Trump signs order to shift disaster preparations from Fema to state and local governments

Reuters
Tue 18 Mar 2025 22.12 EDT

“From day one, the Trump administration has been eroding the nation’s capacity to plan for, respond to, and recover from disasters,” Moore told Reuters.

"'They’ve overseen the dismissal of 1,000 Fema staff – who won’t be there to respond to a flood or wildfire – and are withholding funding from local and state governments who are doing risk reduction projects and more.'

"Shana Udvardy, a senior researcher at the #UnionOfConcernedScientists, said she was concerned the order marked 'another dangerous step' that would leave communities with fewer resources to prepare for future disasters.

"'The executive order shifts most of the responsibility for #DisasterPreparedness to state and local governments, asking them to make more expensive infrastructure investments without outlining the federal role in that,” she said."

« The devastating impacts of the climate crisis reached new heights in 2024, with scores of unprecedented heatwaves, floods and storms across the globe, according to the UN’s World Meteorological Organization. […] The world is already deep into the climate crisis, with the WMO report saying that for the first time, the 10 hottest years on record all occurred in the last decade. However, global carbon emissions have continued to rise, which will bring even worse impacts. […] Dr Davide Faranda, from ClimaMeter, said: “Every fraction of a degree matters. The choices we make today will determine the severity of climate impacts in the years to come.” » theguardian.com/environment/20
