(Continued from last post) The funny thing is, though, that even though all of this seems very deep and meaningful, what I really mean to say is that art is alive. And living things are often very down-to-earth and practical—they have to be, in order to survive.
Like a candle lit at Mary's feet: while it’s just a candle emitting fumes and posing a fire hazard, it is also a visual representation of a prayer. And it -is- a prayer. That’s how symbolism works—it’s not just about what it represents, but about being the thing it symbolizes. So, while there’s meaning and intention in this artwork, it’s also just a lamp, with a power cord and an LED that won’t last forever. Very prosaic.
