Erika Varis Doggett<p>At <a href="https://mas.to/tags/NAACL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NAACL</span></a> this week and I’m delighted to see the name change to “Nations of the Americas” as well as the special theme for this year of multi- and cross-culturalism in <a href="https://mas.to/tags/NLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NLP</span></a>. </p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/NLProc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NLProc</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/LanguageModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LanguageModels</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/CompLing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CompLing</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/ComputationalLinguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputationalLinguistics</span></a></p>
Lianna<p>As long as you...</p><p>(1) host and run it yourself,<br>(2) it's open source,<br>(3) it's not trained on art or personal data,<br>(4) it's not constantly re-trained at extreme energy costs to be "up to date",<br>(5) it's not advertised as an information source, therapy, search engine, artificial intelligence or anything else it's not,</p><p>there's literally no ethical issue in <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a>. It's just a mathematical language model.</p><p><a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linguistics</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/compling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>compling</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/computationallinguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computationallinguistics</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/chatgpt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chatgpt</span></a></p>
Lianna<p>I wonder how <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/hashtags" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hashtags</span></a> would have been developed differently if they had been invented and popularised by people speaking a <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>language</span></a> with strongly marked cases.</p><p>If I post 'Sauce mit Pilzen' (German for 'sauce with mushrooms'), and I would like to tag the mushrooms, I can't just go '<a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/Pilzen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pilzen</span></a>', because '<a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/Pilzen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pilzen</span></a>' is a different hashtag from '<a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/Pilze" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pilze</span></a>'. Let alone <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/Pilzes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pilzes</span></a> and <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/Pilz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pilz</span></a>.</p><p>Would we tag things with <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/SemanticWeb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SemanticWeb</span></a> URIs?<br><a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/hashtag" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hashtag</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/compling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>compling</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/computationallinguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computationallinguistics</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/l10n" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>l10n</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/i18n" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>i18n</span></a> <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linguistics</span></a></p>
Lianna<p>🇬🇧 Hey there!</p><p>I'm <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/newHere" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>newHere</span></a> at the Localization Café. ☕</p><p>I have been working as a freelancer for some time, translating and localising what mostly ends up being <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/videoGames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videoGames</span></a>. My language pair is <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/English" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>English</span></a> and <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/German" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>German</span></a>. </p><p>Outside my <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/freelancing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>freelancing</span></a> work, I am a <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linguistics</span></a> and <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/compLing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>compLing</span></a> student who is currently finishing up my dual degree.</p><p>In the future I would like to work as an in-house localisation worker in the <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/gaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gaming</span></a> industry; fingers crossed, since <a href="https://localization.cafe/tags/gamedev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gamedev</span></a> is a difficult field to get into! :)</p>
Nick M<p>When I started in <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ComputationalLinguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputationalLinguistics</span></a> / <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NLProc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NLProc</span></a>, some of the stuff with word embeddings and topic modeling felt like kind of a stretch re: what we could do with language models, but at least the formalisms were interesting and it felt like there was an effort to treat it as exploratory and not "hey language models understand language!" Now it feels like the field has been co-opted by all the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/MathyMaths" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MathyMaths</span></a> and <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TESCREAL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TESCREAL</span></a> bullshit, and I so desperately want to get back to real <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/CompLing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CompLing</span></a></p>
