The Commons: Shared Resources, Living Democracy
#Commons are resources and practices collectively managed, beyond #state and market. From #Cleisthenes to #Ostrom, including #Rousseau, #Spinoza, #Arendt, #Proudhon, and contemporary theorists, they embody the hope of concrete, inclusive #politicalphilosophy @democracy@newsmast.community @philosophy@a.gup.pe @philosophy@newsmast.community @socialism @democracy@hashtag.place @politics @socialsciences @philosophy@hashtag.place

Clastres and the Enigma of Power: Rethinking Politics Beyond the State
What if #domination were not inevitable? #Clastres shows that societies can live without a #State or #hierarchy. Faced with #TechnicalCentralization and bureaucracy, it is urgent to invent new forms of #democracy, from #commons to #RelationalEcology. #society #social #centralization #bureaucracy #philosophy #PoliticalPhilosophy @philosophy@a.gup.pe @philosophy@newsmast.community What Clastres…

Three months ago, I thought post-growth economics was about giving things up. Now I see it's about holding on — to what truly matters.
From utopia-writing to blueprint-building: I’ve published a piece on how I changed my hopes about progress, tech, and civilization’s future.
Here is the piece: https://eduzen.bearblog.dev/from-utopia-to-blueprint-how-i-discovered-post-growth-economics-is-within-reach/
Let’s talk:

The free and #commons-based fediverse grows organically, like a beautiful garden. Social web technologies can only emerge and evolve by #CommonsParticipation, crafted by many people with love and the joy of coding, while exploring realms of creation.
Joyful creation is where #fediverse allows us to social code the social code together.

It is!
I just posted some more on the revitalization of #DelightfulCommons, e.g. how #FOSS projects are never 'dead'. A project is either good enough or even 'complete' and lives on like a tardigrade, or the value disperse within the #commons. The way it disperses can be influenced by gardening, so it helps furtilize the common ground.

The revitalization is made possible by @nlnet support my 'commons janitoring'.
@botanyone a great idea for #scientists, #academics and #Publishers ! @academicchatter
Instead of posting about a new commons today, I'll just link to a @pluralistic post about a political framework built around Ostrom's insights on governance of #Commons.
Also relates to Mercier and Sperber's "The Enigma of Reason". I'm a broken record since I read that book: we are flawed as individual rational being, we are great at collective rational decision making.

I discovered @streetcomplete some time ago and began answering quests, as a small and regular contribution to #OSM datas. It's fun, and this is a way to re-discover my daily neighbourhood in #montreal
Some questions for streetcomplete users :
- how to edit a quest when I accidentally validate a wrong data ?
- is there a way to add informations (objects) for public #art pieces, which are located in public space ? (such as sculptures, statues, murals...)
Thanks for your help

Bravo aux équipes lauréates qui ont su allier éthique, tech et interopérabilité !
L’Europe a des idées. Elle les rend concrètes.
A little over a year ago I wrote a #Wikipedia article about the "Goose and the Common", an 18th century poem about the privatization of #commons land during the enclosures in England:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Goose_and_the_Common
My partner just started reading "Sunrise on the Reaping", the second prequel to the #HungerGames trilogy, which quotes the poem. Page views jumped up 3X when the book was published in March, and are still greatly elevated. So I guess the internet is not fully dead yet :)
To people living within those systems, it's like water to a fish. Some concrete examples are the "Fluss" on the lake ägeri in Zug, or the Bis in Valais.
The Swiss' traditional forest promenade isn't just about keeping healthy, it's also to make sure there is no one breaking the Commons rules.
Now the commons are much less important in everyday life, but they still exist to a certain extent.
In Switzerland, 80% of alpine lands is managed as a Common. The land is shared between several users and rules of usages are set by the users themselves.
This dates from WAAYYYY back, the town of Törbel in high Valais manages high pastures this way since 1224. Pastures, irrigation but also forestry is managed this way all over Switzerland. 1/2
And there is a much wider significance, for me at least. What are the drivers for the #NatureEmergency & #ClimateEmergency? What structures & systems can we imagine & build that address these drivers?
Hence my interest in #WoodMeadows, #ForestGarden, #commons, #colonialism, #capitalism and #fascism. They are linked.
As creation gets democratized, capital cries "deprofessionalization!" But are all those meta-roles in corporations really serving us — or just maintaining power structures? Let’s rethink what overhead ought to be in a world where anyone can build.

Valve is a rare post-growth unicorn: no venture capital, no quarterly pressure — just sustainable growth and a thriving creative commons.
But what happens when GabeN leaves the scene? Can it stay true to its values?
Do you know other privately held near-monopolies that resist the corporate drift?

@mastodonmigration @ireneista @jpaskaruk absolutely, it is protecting a part of the #commons, which have already been colonised or enclosed in so many aspects, for too long
I think it should be socially acceptable for artists to cold-call anyone they see using AI-art and ask them:
Hey bud! Would you like to commission a $50-$500 drawing of higher quality, made by a human artist you can credit by name as our mutual proof of you being a bond fide Supporter of The Arts?
This is the sort of digital receipt that you should want to wear as a badge on your most punk-looking jacket with pride: I PAID FOR ART.
