When I was growing up one of the things I thoroughly enjoyed was watching baseball on TV. It was extra special when I could catch a game with my grandpa at his place. I’m trying to be more conscious of when games are on so I can get back into watching after years of only catching a few here or there. I recently learned all #MILB games can be viewed free on the Bally Sports Live app on my phone, which connects to the #Chromecast on my TV! #AAABaseball #BuffaloBisons
The Chromecast 2's device authentication certificate has expired

Is your #Chromecast broken? You'll need to download the latest version of Google Home and then factory reset the Chromecast and re-attach it to your Google Home setup.
It looks a lot like planned obsolescence in the form of a 10-year old expired certificate.
The Register: Google says it's rolling out fix for stricken Chromecasts

I noticed that one of them is on the #IzzyOnDroid repo and the libre version is one incremental version behind.
Also, if you scroll down on the Aves regular version, #FDroid warns you that it's anti features is use of #Google proprietary libraries.
So #Chromecast or #AndroidTV features?
Google has issued an update so that Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio devices should start working again... even if they were temporarily "bricked" by a factory reset and couldn't connect to the internet last week. #Chromecast https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Streaming/Regarding-an-issue-with-Chromecast-2nd-gen-and-Chromecast-Audio/td-p/686992
Google is rolling out a fix for Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio devices that stopped working due to an expired certificate. It should roll out over the next few days to devices with an internet connection. If you already performed a factory reset you're out of luck for now. #Chromecast #ChromecastAudio #MediaStreamers https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Streaming/Regarding-an-issue-with-Chromecast-2nd-gen-and-Chromecast-Audio/td-p/686992
@awfulwoman I have a couple of #chromecast Audio devices myself, but I'm slowly phasing them out with pi zero boards running #piCorePlayer hooked up to #homeassistant .
I'm curious about other alternatives, though.
Also, fuuuuck you very much #Googlle for bricking my #Chromecast that was working fine. #enshittification
Google's Chromecast v2 (2015) and Chromecast Audio stopped working this week due to an expired certificate. Google is working on a fix, but if you're affected one thing you should *not* do is factory reset your device while you wait. https://arstechnica.com/google/2025/03/googles-10-year-old-chromecast-is-busted-but-a-fix-is-coming/ #Chromecast #Google #MediaStreamer
Someone on my feed posted about this #Chromecast issue, can't remember who.

#followerpower #music
Chromecast Chaos!
An expired certificate has left 2nd-gen Chromecasts & Chromecast Audios in the dark.
Google is working on a fix. Avoid factory resets!

On a more positive outlook: there is an #OpenHardware alternative called #OtterCast.

Have been following it for a long time, but didn't do anything with it. Anyone has experience with it? I would love to hear about that!
It's only time before Google messes up again, or actively stops supporting their devices.
This is why I very reluctantly use Google's Chromecast. It's very convenient, but too damn reliant on external parties/services.
Did your 2nd gen #Chromecast brick yesterday? So did everyone else's!
There's a pretty solid explanation about what happened on reddit, but basically a certificate seems to have expired and updating it has a domino effect affecting many other Google product updates as well.
If Google wills, bricked Chromecasts should start working soon-ish, but this is, once again, a sad reminder that even if you buy hardware you don't necessarily actually own it nowadays.

DNS has a bad reputation but, let me tell you, the real baddies in networking are TLS certificates.
Latest victim: #Chromecast, which used a 10 years certificate and forgot to update it before expiration https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/comments/1j7lhrs/the_chromecast_2s_device_authentication/
Well the good news is that maybe the #Chromecast failure mystery got solved.
Expired certificate

There's our problem: Not After : Mar 9 16:44:39 2025 GMT! Google issued an intermediate CA, presumably the one for all 2nd-gen devices, with a validity period of only 10 years, and it just expired. As a result, none of Google's official clients succeed in validating the device as genuine and they refuse to talk to it, including during initial setup.
(Fix details per OP)
In addition to the Chrome fix below, here's how you can fix casting from Android! Connect to your sender device (the phone or tablet you're casting from) using ADB and run the following:
adb shell am start-activity -a com.google.android.gms.cast.settings.CastSettingsCollapsingDebugAction
(Android 11 and earlier may need CastSettingsDebugAction instead of CastSettingsCollapsingDebugAction.)
In the settings panel that pops up, scroll down to "Connection" and enable "Bypass Device Auth". That should fix casting from apps and partially fix the Google Home app (I can now see the device and casting status, but some things like changing its name still don't seem to work. That might be something transient on my end, though.)
For those without ADB access, it should be totally possible to make an Android app that launches this hidden settings pane automatically. If anyone wants to do that, go ahead! I'll edit this post
