Megan<p>I like the carbon tax. And I like the GST.</p><p>Why?</p><p>Carbon tax with rebate is a good carrot and stick approach to bring about behaviour change. Especially to reduce use of fossil fuels, which not only are burning up the planet, but literally fueling wars and genocide.</p><p>GST helps catch gaps in the income tax system. Wealthy people can use tax shelters to reduce/avoid income tax. But its not as easy to avoid the GST. And wealthy spend a lot.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/taxation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>taxation</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/GST" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GST</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/CarbonTax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CarbonTax</span></a></p>

Daniel AJ Sokolov<p>Nobody in <a href="https://social.heise.de/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> seems to mind that the consumer <a href="https://social.heise.de/tags/CarbonTax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CarbonTax</span></a> was scrapped without a decision by <a href="https://social.heise.de/tags/parliament" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>parliament</span></a>. You see, Canada is a <a href="https://social.heise.de/tags/monarchy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>monarchy</span></a>. The <a href="https://social.heise.de/tags/Crown" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Crown</span></a> has to approve all acts, and it can withdraw approval, too. While it's difficult to make new acts without parliament, it's easy to scrap them. Canadians have seen this before. </p><p>In this case, the Crown (Her Excellency the Governor General in Council) simply changed the Regulation under the Act and set the tax rates at zero. The Act remains. <a href="https://social.heise.de/tags/law" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>law</span></a></p>

Bri | 🚴📦💨✨ | 🏳️‍🌈<p>I calculated it once using the CBC tool, the consumer carbon tax was netting me about $45/month ($540/year). Canada is one of the worse carbon emitters per capita and a carbon tax was literally the least disruptive, most neoliberal way to try to meet our emission reduction targets. Obviously the evaporation of the <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/carbontax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>carbontax</span></a> was never going to result in lower gas prices. Just like covering this country in oil and gas pipelines will not ever, fucking EVER mean lower prices. JustG<p>IMO that the <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/carbontax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>carbontax</span></a> is gone because the liberals made it the center piece legislation to mitigate the effects of climate change with no structure to support it. Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>As expected, Danielle Smith never cared about the part of the carbon tax that applied to individuals. She just used that part for campaigning. She is a puppet for the oil industry. What she wants to abolish is the industrial portion of the tax.</p><p>This is Carney’s first test. If he can win an election (possibly even an Edmonton riding) while defending the industrial carbon tax, he will send a signal that his climate credentials are legitimate. </p><p>If he can maintain that tax in government and use it to decarbonize the economy, then he will show climate leadership.<br><a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/canpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canpoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/cdnpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdnpoli</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/carbontax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>carbontax</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/abpoli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abpoli</span></a><br><a href="https://flipboard.com/@cbcnews/calgary-s2m5l3ffz/-/a-0LvF0EN0QOu5nVKTIlwXTQ%3Aa%3A107108217-%2F0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">flipboard.com/@cbcnews/calgary</span><span class="invisible">-s2m5l3ffz/-/a-0LvF0EN0QOu5nVKTIlwXTQ%3Aa%3A107108217-%2F0</span></a></p>
