At school, I felt uncomfortable interacting with girls and avoided "girly" things, as if they were off-limits to me. However, once I was home, I often found myself dreaming about being female.My feelings about gender weren't constant. Some days, I strongly desired to be a girl. Other days, the idea of being female felt wrong or uncomfortable. Rat Can't Read (she/her)Ultimately, I think the <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Seinfeld" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Seinfeld</a> episode where George questions if he's gay ends with an affirmation of his being straight because he's attracted to women. In the binary, monosexist world of Seinfeld and its era, <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/bisexuality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bisexuality</a> wasn't really talked about and wasn't really an option. <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Biphobia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Biphobia</a> was present in the erasure of the option to even be <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/bisexual" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bisexual</a>. George only has two options—he can be straight or gay. And since he's attracted to women, he must be straight.As a closeted, very religious teen, I sort of took comfort in that. If George could question his sexual orientation and conclude he was straight, then surely my own <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/questioning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#questioning</a> didn't inherently mean I was <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/queer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#queer</a>, right? I was attracted to men, so I must be straight! Yet for me, the questioning persisted. The need to constantly prove that I was straight enough and woman enough by patriarchal, heteronormative, Christofascist standards persisted.

Rat Can't Read (she/her)Growing up in <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Christofascism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Christofascism</a>, I had been taught that even thinking you might be <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/queer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#queer</a> was wrong, so while I'm not trying to hold up <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Seinfeld" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Seinfeld</a> as some sort of bastion of <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/LGBTQ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LGBTQ</a> representation (it's absolutely not!), the fact that it depicted George even considering that he might be gay, however poorly that episode has aged, showed me the closest thing that I had as a teenager to a mirror of my own thoughts at the time. Here was somebody on TV who was trying to figure out how he felt and what it meant, however crudely and comically it was presented. And honestly, George's anxiety about the whole situation also mirrored my anxiety at the time. I also sometimes experienced certain sensations in my body when I was around people of the same gender? Did that mean I was gay? How could I know if I was gay or straight? I don't know if this is exactly an unpopular opinion, since it seems like other people have adopted this stance, but I want to share a story about my relationship with this show and my own journey to realizing that I'm <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/queer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#queer</a>. A bit of a tangent: As I've mentioned before, I grew up in a very <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Christfascist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Christfascist</a> environment, and on a certain level, I probably realized I was bi when I was a teenager, even though I didn't know <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/Bisexuality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Bisexuality</a> was an option then. In that environment, you could be straight or gay, and being gay was the worst thing you could be. I was going through puberty and realizing I was attracted to multiple genders, but I couldn't admit that to myself because doing so would be too terrifying. I assumed at the time that my attraction to women was the devil tempting me into sin, but because I was also attracted to men, I assumed I was straight.
