Some #classicalmusic for you today: a companion piece to the fourth #cello suite by #Bach. Hope you enjoy!
Eastern.
After the overwhelming performance of the St. John Passion last week, I am curious to hear how I will evaluate this performance. Whether it 'beats' my all-time favorite (La Petite Bande / Sigiswald Kuijken).
J. S. Bach, BWV 249, Easter Oratorio / Osteroratorium, Gardiner - English Baroque Soloists.

Pt. 2: No. 52, Aria, "Können Tränen meiner Wangen" (Alto) ·
Stephanie Blythe/Emmanuelle Haïm/John Nelson/Ensemble Orchestral de Paris
Können Tränen meiner Wangen
nichts erlangen,
o so nehmt mein Herz hinein.
Aber laßt es bei den Fluten,
wenn die Wunden milde bluten,
auch die Opferschale sein.
In 25 minutes, #Bach and #Mendelssohn's 'Lobgesang' with Tilling, Cirillo and Carrel from #Utrecht https://www.worldconcerthall.com/en/schedule/bach_and_mendelssohns_lobgesang_with_tilling_cirillo_and_carrel_from_utrecht/86915/ #wch

19. Arie A
Falsche Welt, dein schmeichelnd Küssen,

Sind zu Fallen angestift.

Today, #Bach's 'St Matthew Passion' with Breuer, Richter, Grahl, Hobbs, Brook and Loges from #Berlin https://www.worldconcerthall.com/en/schedule/bachs_st_matthew_passion_with_breuer_richter_grahl_hobbs_brook_and_loges_from_berlin/86923/ #wch
Next four days will be spent in two big churches - the Grote kerk in Edam which truly is huge, and the Domkerk in Utrecht which would be more or less as big except half of it collapsed in a tornado in the 17th century.
Two days of St Matthews passion on flute and recorder, then a style pivot to singing 20th century German church music by Diessler and Reda, plus two church services. Hope the cantor doesn’t gives us too many hymn settings to sight read on Sunday morning! :D

Our final piece is a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s by the legendary cellist Yo Yo Ma (https://youtu.be/Rx_IibJH4rA?si=PZOHasxbo2FpFfnu) in Tennessee/North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains from his “Nature at Play” series

Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565” (https://tinyurl.com/mp2vtvre) is considered one of the most famous and recognizable Organ compositions in music history due to being featured in horror films and other media. Despite this it was nearly lost to time due to not being published until well after Bach had passed. The single surviving manuscript of this piece still raises questions RE: Bach’s intentions for the piece

Next we have the iconic “Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565” composed by Johann Sebastian Bach but arranged in Boogie Woogie jazz style by Hungarian pianist Dániel Balázs AKA Mr. Firehand and his Trio (https://youtu.be/gbObxuZoiMw?si=b2D_fJOncWHBo7lP)

First up we have Canadian jazz piano virtuoso Oscar Peterson and his Trio with “The Bach Suite” (https://youtu.be/RPPQLzwCosI?si=5wx9Mofx3TCQ6sYt) Peterson originally trained in classical piano and unlike other jazz tributes to classical composers “The Bach Suite” is not mostly based on musical quotations (see Jon Batiste’s Beethoven tribute from yesterday: https://youtu.be/-5YRhvH6Uys?si=WM85GMxPEM0_1p0b) but stil pays homage to Bach’s work (e.g. the “conversation” between the left and right hands)
