Tracing back #programming language history to the root of the very first (mnemonic) #GOTO instruction (jump/branch) I found two different sources:

1. In 1954 Nathanael Rochester developed the "first" mnemonic #assembler for the #IBM 701 #mainframe computer that uses "TR" jump commands: shrtn.escalar.pt/ZuE5

2. In 1947 the "manual" for the #Whirlwind computer contained the "sp x" mnemonic: shrtn.escalar.pt/FdYC

So, which one was actually the "first" to use mnemonics for branching?

Configuring Amstrad CPC 6128 emulation on MSDOS with No$CPC (found on an old floppy):

Monochrome Green like my first Monitor. CP/M 1.0 is running fine! CoOl! :0)

Some suggestions for another CPC MSDOS emulator?

This is crazy. Someone managed to run #Linux (v4.4) on an #Intel 4004 #CPU from 1971, one of the first commercially available microprocessors ever.

The craziest part: It became possible by writing a #MIPS #R3000 #emulator in 4004 #assembler that fits into the 4096 bytes of addressable memory. The emulator then runs the kernel. My mind is blown.

My #CompSci lecturers often dropped the names of inventors. But only if they were men. We talked about Gordon Moore, obviously Turing 🏳️‍🌈 was mentioned, about Don Knuth, about Chomsky etc.

But when we discussed the #ARM architecture, we never talked about the inventor *Sophie Wilson*. We also never talked about *Mary Ann Horton*, despite her work on `vi` and `terminfo` -- but of course we mentioned Bill Joy. We discussed the Spanning Tree Protocol, but not its inventor *Radia Perlman*. We have the whole field of #SoftwareEngineering, but who coined the term? *Margaret Hamilton*. We mentioned the ENIAC and v. Neumann, but failed to talk about *Adele Goldstine*. We discussed the origins of #OOP and #Smalltalk but ignored *Adele Goldberg*. We programmed in #Assembly but never talked about the woman who wrote the first #Assembler, *Kathleen Booth*. And don't get me started on #Safari and our sweet @lisamelton <3 Or any of the (incomplete list) of *Ida Rhodes, Carol Shaw, Shafi Goldwasser, Edith Clarke, Annie Easley, Joyce Little*, ...

And today? Let's talk about our favorite trans woman CPU designer, Lynn Conway.

Launched over 46 years ago, a recent chip failure kept Voyager 1 from sending readable data back from interstellar space.

But they figured out how to fix it! By moving code in its tiny 70kB memory, they can work around that broken chip. So the mission continues! 🛰️

My first computer was a #zxspectrum my second an #atari 800xl. For those into programming games on #retrocomputing platforms I would appreciate your views on the relative ease of programming for each one and also what system you regard as having superior capabilities. A sensitive topic I am sure, and one that probably is not clear. But I plan to mess around with graphics on each machine using #c and if I am brave #assembler.
