Rand said, "I didn't just come here. Egwene invited me into the women's apartments."
Nynaeve lowered her knitting and gave him an amused smile. "the Light help me, Rand, you are becoming more Shienaran every day. invited into the women's apartments, indeed." she sniffed.

not saying that Rand is trans, but I AM saying that Nynaeve is saying "trans rights" here

Book 22 of 2025: The Propaganda Girls by Lisa Rogak 5⭐

A very interesting read. There are a lot of WWII books and in the last several years women of WWII have been the topic of more books. But I don't recall ever before seeing books specifically about propaganda and WWII women. It read like a novel and it's format is similar to Code Girls by Liza Munday, which I also enjoyed.

I decided not to keep going with Navigational Entanglements for the #QueerRomanceClub because it just wasn’t landing for me, and my library hold on A Gentleman’s Gentleman by TJ Alexander came in. I finished that one today and it was delightful. I really enjoyed the characters. Very Jeeves and Wooster but make them both trans and falling in love. I thought the ending was rushed and I didn’t love it but aside from that, very fun regency romance. #AmReading #bookstodon @queerromanceclub

The Ladies Road Guide to Utter Ruin by Alison Goodman

4 stars

A very enjoyable sequel! I particularly appreciated the real historical people and events this time around; they felt a little more integrated into the story (and I love me some ladies of Llangollen no matter the context). Some of the mystery elements got a bit convoluted but I am fully committed to the main and secondary romances and very excited about the setup of the next book. Devastating that I'll probably have to wait a year until I find out what happens next 😭

book two: THE GREAT HUNT by Robert Jordan

far from pretending to be dead and shacking up with a Cairhienen innkeeper, Rand is still in Shienar with the other Emond's Fielders and Moiraine and Lan

we open on Rand and Lan doing sword training, and a wind that pins Rand in place up on the wall

this is totes a thing one can do with the One Power, but at this time there's no one near enough to have done it

Lan says "strange things happen this close to the Blight", which Rand takes to mean that he isn't taking this rogue wind seriously

he also says "with the Amyrlin Seat coming here, you would be better off being a week gone from this place", which Rand takes to mean that he's in serious trouble and that the Amyrlin Seat will gentle him, or worse

we also learn that Moiraine has been ignoring him

"Over the years, I've found only one metaphor that encapsulates the nature of these #AI power players:

Empires.

During the era of European #colonialism, empires seized and extracted #resources that were not their own and exploited the labour they subjugated to mine, cultivate, and refine those resources for the empire's enrichment.

They projected racist, dehumanising ideas of their own superiority and modernity to justify the invasion of sovereignty, theft and subjugation."

I'm nearing the end of THE EYE OF THE WORLD and I'm trying to order my thoughts ... a lot of what I'm thinking touches on later stuff

but Rand "kills" "the Dark One" and Moraine STILL doesn't tell him he's the Dragon, as compared to in the TV show, where it's practically the first thing out of her mouth

like Moiraine [TV] is GOSSIPY compared to Moraine [book], and some of that has to be just the way modern TV shows are structured, like, she has to make it textual bc we don't have half a book of worldbuilding

but idk, bc they still could have had her keep it a secret from Rand, and frankly it makes her seem kind of ... incoherent

like, why does she work with Lanfear in season 2? they have to do this thing where he finds out she sent Logain to Cairhien so that he stops trusting her bc she was too trustworthy in season 1??? I guess???

The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels

4 stars

Most of the so-called heretical gnostic writings were widely considered to be lost until a cache was discovered in an Egyptian cave in the 1940s. I was expecting this to be a scholarly translation of the texts with Pagels's commentary, but it was more a narrative history of the early church, with particular attention to the political implications of the struggle between orthodoxy and Gnosticism. Still very engaging, just not what I was expecting.

Some fun facts about Gnostics: women were on the whole much more involved in religious life, including preaching. They were much less hierarchical in structure; some communities drew straws at the beginning of every service to determine who would preach, be deacon, etc. Pagels suggests a potential Buddhist influence (via Alexandria) because of the gnostics' focus on introspection and the inner divinity of all souls.

Now I'm hooked, I just need to find an actual translation of the texts with scholarly commentary!

“Do you not find consciousness alone to be the most exhilarating thing?"

Becky Chambers' A Psalm for the Wild-Built (the first of her Monk and Robot series) is absolutely, positively WONDERFUL, a true must-read. Thoughtful, story-driven, full characters, and thought-provoking. With nods to the camping life, the technology life, the connectedness of the world.

Really, really top-notch.

I’m reading These Letters End in Tears by Musih Tedji Xaviere. It’s a queer romance set in institutionally homophobic Cameroon. The young women are seen kissing in a bar and are arrested, the narrator’s family get her released but are very ashamed of her; she never hears of her genderqueer partner again. The story is told through letters to the missing girlfriend, who the narrator continues to long for years later #AmReading #Bookstodon

I’ve been reading “The Friendship Bench: How Fourteen Grandmothers Inspired a Mental Health Revolution”by Dixon Chibanda MD this weekend and learning how her idea for Friendship Benches that she started in Zimbabwe have now helped half a million people and counting get mental health help worldwide.

If you like nonfiction about mental health, you might like this book.

Finished Kate Elliott’s The Witch Roads a few hours ago. I realized at some point that there’s no way this is a standalone (I don’t know why I ever thought it would be?), and I wasn’t disappointed on that score! Some good stuff in there about persistence and escape and what makes for joy. In between starting & finishing it, I also read The Museum Detective, by Maha Khan Phillips. Very good, and also devastating. #SFF #mystery #AmReading
