ShawnT 🐀Last night I watched "The Brother From Another Planet" (1984) for the first time, and it is pure poetry. The main character is a mute alien who crash lands in NYC and finds his way to Harlem. ·𐑛𐑮𐑰𐑥𐑕𐑐𐑱𐑕starting my new blog series "on-grid mesh networks and micro-farming" because high-density mesh is actually way harder to pull off plus rural areas can be pretty scary if you aren't a white boy. I welcome the confrontation, but that ain't for everyone.Same goes for vertical farming, it might be inefficient, but our soil out here is poison and getting out would cost an amount that nobody has. Solarpunk Presents Podcast7.2: Ariel & Christina Discuss: Why Must Utopia Be Cruel?In this episode, Ariel and Christina try to get to the bottom of why our fictional visions of utopia are so negative. They often involve mindless acquiescence to an authoritarian nanny state, the oppression and labor of an underclass, or both. It’s as if we can’t imagine a situation in which we all voluntarily treat each other (reasonably) decently and life can be good for everyone. We discuss the literary origins of utopia, how it has evolved (or not) as a concept, and Ariel gives a few examples of sci-fi futures that are about as close to her style of solarpunk utopia as can be. 1001 Other AlbumsMoor Mother – Fetish Bones (2016, US)As randomly chosen by survey[1] on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 684 on <a href="https://1001otheralbums.com/the-list/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The List</a>, submitted by platenworm.I think it would be a disservice to attempt to sum up this album, the debut from poet, visual artist, and musician Moor Mother aka Camae Ayewa. Like all of Moor Mother’s work, it’s a difficult listen, some might think it requires CWs. But it’s a necessary listen. Her work is necessary. It’s truth, it’s harsh, it’s protest in sonic form. As the Bandcamp description says:<blockquote>Fetish Bones is not an album meant to help you forget. It is made so that you will remember the injustices that we bear witness to and participate in.</blockquote>If you dig this one, I highly recommend going down the Moor Mother/Camae Ayewa rabbit hole. Perhaps track down Ayewa’s <a href="https://www.blackquantumfuturism.com/product-page/copy-of-bqf-theory-amp-practice-vol-i" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">debut book of poetry</a> of the same title, also released in 2016. Or check out other Moor Mother releases, such as that from last year, <a href="https://moormother.bandcamp.com/album/the-great-bailout" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Great Bailout</a> (which made my personal AOTY list).
