'When #BigOil Says Jump, Republicans Ask How High?' #GOP Sends #ClimateKilling Bill to #Trump's Desk

"It's a sorry testament to the influence of Big Oil on Capitol Hill that one of the top priorities of Congress is a blatant handout to the worst actors in the #FossilFuel industry," said one critic.

Jessica Corbett, Feb 28, 2025

"Climate advocates are blasting congressional Republicans this week for their latest gift to fossil fuel industry: sending a resolution to kill the federal Methane Emissions Reduction Program to the desk of U.S. President Donald #Trump.

"#BigOil - backed Trump is expected to sign the Congressional Review Act resolution, which senators passed along party lines on Thursday. That followed a Wednesday vote in the House of Representatives, where Democratic Reps. Henry Cuellar (Texas), Jared Golden (Maine), Vincente Gonzalez (Texas), Adam Gray (Calif.), Kristen Donald Rivet (Mich.), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.) supported the measure alongside all Republicans present except Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

"#Methane has more than 80 times as much warming power as carbon dioxide during its first two decades in the atmosphere. The pollution program was established by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act and finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last November. The Associated Press reported Thursday that 'most major oil and gas companies do not release enough methane to trigger the fee, which is $900 per ton, an amount that would increase to $1,500 by 2026.'

"The GOP resolution will end the program, but not the mandate from the 2022 law. #MahyarSorour, #SierraClub's director of beyond fossil fuels policy, declared that 'this attack on EPA's implementation of the methane waste emissions charge is short-sighted and harmful. It remains a legal requirement for EPA to hold the biggest methane #polluters #accountable for their negligence.'

"'Forcing the agency to implement the charge some other way after conducting a thorough, well-researched process is as wasteful of taxpayer resources as these oil and gas operators are wasteful of harmful methane,' Sorour argued.

"'Technology to monitor and stop leaks is readily available and easy to implement, so only wasteful, careless corporations will face a fee for excessive methane pollution. Despite this setback, Sierra Club will not stop fighting to make polluters pay for their egregious actions.'"

I only just started this book but I fucking love it. Please read. Thank.

osupress.oregonstate.edu/book/

but no srsly, thank you for considering it. It feels like talking to a friend who Knows how fucked up your family is.

You've been away for a while, so you're shielded from the worst of their damaging tantrums, but uncompromising bare facts of the situation still sober you up somehow.

osupress.oregonstate.eduIndigenous Critical Reflections on Traditional Ecological Knowledge | OSU PressWith more than fifty contributors, Indigenous Critical Reflections on Traditional Ecological Knowledge offers important perspectives by Indigenous Peoples on Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Indigenous value systems. The book aims to educate and inspire readers about the importance of decolonizing how Indigenous Knowledges are considered and used outside of Native communities. By including the work of Indigenous storytellers, poets, and scholars from around the globe, editor Lara Jacobs and chapter authors effectively explore the Indigenous value systems—relationships, reciprocity, and responsibility—that are fundamental to Indigenous Knowledge systems and cultures. Indigenous languages and positionality statements are featured for each of the contributors to frame their cultural and geographical background and to allow each Indigenous voice to lead discussions and contribute critical discourse to the literature on Indigenous Knowledges and value systems. By creating space for each of these individual voices, this volume challenges colonial extraction norms and highlights the importance of decolonial methods in understanding and protecting Indigenous Knowledges. Indigenous Critical Reflections on Traditional Ecological Knowledge is an essential resource for students, academics, members of Tribal, state, and federal governments, Indigenous communities, and non-Indigenous allies as well as a valuable addition to environmental and Indigenous studies collections.   Contributors include: Melinda M. More from #DemocracyNow's interview with #RalphNader:

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Ralph? Ralph, let me ask you. For the #progressive movement now, as it faces the return of Donald #Trump, what do you think are the next steps in terms of #resistance or reorganization that have to occur?

RALPH NADER: Well, it’s got to be focused on #Congress. The House is not yet resolved, but only Congress can stop the #Trumpsters. It isn’t just Trump. Trump is a figurehead. Trump is a bullhorn. It’s the Trumpsters. It’s the #HeritageFoundation. It’s [#Project2025]. It’s the takeover of departments that are dedicated to standing up for the people, the environmental protection bureau [#EPA], the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau [#CFPB], the #AutoSafety bureau [I'll bet Trump puts Elon in charge of that], the Federal Trade Commission [#FTC], the Justice Department. These are all going to be turned into virulent, vengeful or inactive governments. They want to destroy the civil service, bring it back to the spoils system. We’re in for huge turmoil. One can say that the election yesterday really elected #PresidentVance. Trump is not going to last. He’s going to disintegrate. And #Vance is in a position to become the next president.

So, what has to be done, Juan, is massive focus on Congress, which is the main constitutionally authorized lever to hold the executive branch #accountable, build for 2026. The Democrats will have far fewer people up for the Senate than the Republicans, unlike this year.

And they’ve got to stop blasting away at people who want to challenge the #DemocraticParty. The party says to everybody on their side, “You know how bad the Republicans are? You got nowhere to go.” They spent a lot of money attacking the #GreenParty, the tiny Green Party, instead of listening to William Barber, Reverend William Barber, who said, “Look, there’s 80 million people who aren’t going to vote. A lot of them are low-wage workers. If you get 15% of low-wage workers who aren’t voting to go to the polls, the Democrats would have won.” They didn’t listen to him. They didn’t listen to all the citizen groups who know how to talk to people, not just liberal patients or liberal workers, but conservative workers, conservative patients. Remember, a vast majority of this country wants to tax the undertaxed #wealthy and the #corporations. They want to break up the #BigBanks. And above all, in poll after poll, they say that corporations have too much control over their lives. Sherrod Brown pulled in his horns and lost. #BernieSanders campaigned on corporate power, and he won in a landslide in Vermont. And Harris refused to campaign with Bernie Sanders, but she campaigned in several states with #LizCheney of the criminal Cheney family and the invasion of #Iraq that killed over a million Iraqis.

So the blunders were endless. And it was basically turning her back on the progressive and the genuine populist constituency in this country. And Bernie, of course, supported Harris, but his positions were rejected constantly. He said, “Get the living wage up. Get universal healthcare up. Crack down on corporate crooks. Increase Social Security benefits that have been frozen for over 50 years. And get the taxation on the wealthy.” She ignored all that. Just throwaway lines.

OUCH!

“A #jury of 12 people, peers, over the course of six weeks, deliberated on the #evidence and #facts and unanimously determined #guilt on 34 #felony counts,” she told Jimmy Kimmel last Tuesday. “There was a defense #attorney who actively participated in selecting that jury, who actively made decisions about #witnesses to call, witnesses to cross-examine. And the jury made their decision and you know, I think that the reality is, #cheaters don’t like getting caught and being held #accountable.”

#Trump’s Manhattan Criminal #Trial May Be #delayed by at Least One Month as He Continues Multidecade Streak of Never Being Held #Accountable for Anything

This does not bode well for any hope of the accused criminal being brought to #justice.

Last week, the ex-president’s lawyers had asked for the trial to be delayed until the #SupremeCourt rules on his claims of immunity in a separate criminal manner (the federal one involving his attempt to overturn the 2020 #election).

@harrybeary I must say I'm not a huge fan of full party-list PR, especially in large or heterogeneous jurisdictions. There are real benefits in having a #local member who is #accountable to a community of interest, rather than every member being elected at-large. As someone who lives in a #regional area, I worry that would mean that MPs would be even more concentrated in urban areas.

I therefore favour the NZ #MMR system rather than Brazil-style full #proportionalrepresentation.

This is why #fat shaming can have tragic consequences.

If this sort of #weight-based #medical bias happens to any of y'all, politely tell the #doctor (during your visit) that you want them to write in your file that they are refusing ordering tests for you because of your current weight. This usually causes them to order the test anyways because they do NOT want a malpractice suit. Remember: You want to make a paper trail to hold them #accountable.

“Please raise your hand if you believe both #Hunter & #Trump should be held #accountable for any of the #indictments against them, if #convicted by a jury of their peers,” #Casar said.

#Democrats held their hands high, but few, if any, #Republicans did the same.

“I think it is worse than embarrassing that Republicans won’t raise their hands. They refuse to say that #equal #justice under the #law should apply to everyone,” Casar said.

Is Emily Bender talking about Generative AI or Fox News?

It seems astonishing to me that any news source would #torpedo their #own #reputation that way, to say “We are willing to put fake text out there and publish it as news.”

It’s worth calling that out for being poor practice and at the same time placing a value on authentic content.

Another thing I would love to see is that the companies that create these models, or set them up so people can access them, should be #accountable for their #output.

So, if ChatGPT produces something that amounts to libel or that amounts to medical malpractice, then OpenAI is accountable.

Responsibility and liability:

That would change things in a hurry

"Even the most impressive #AIchatbots require thousands of human work hours to behave in a way their creators want them to, and even then they do it unreliably. The work can be brutal and upsetting, as we will hear this week when the ACM Conference on #Fairness, #Accountability, and #Transparency (#FAccT) gets underway.
