Nicolas Hoizey“Baglafecht weaver” This high and mid-mountain species, which descends at its lowest around 800 meters in Uganda and Kenya, is well adapted to degraded, agricultural and even urban environments. At the base, it lives in the edges and clearings of the mountain forest. It is a solitary nester, which can however organize a collaboration between two couples on the same territory. The nest is discreet, unlike colonial weavers, and can go unnoticed in the foliage. The male builds alone, but can aggressively steal a nest from another weaver species. The female incubates alone, a dozen days, only a few eggs (maximum three). Nicolas Hoizey“Mantled guereza” The mantled guereza (Colobus guereza), also known simply as the guereza, the eastern black-and-white colobus, or the Abyssinian black-and-white colobus, is a black-and-white colobus, a type of Old World monkey. It is native to much of west central and east Africa. It has a distinctive appearance, which is alluded to in its name; the long white fringes of hair that run along each side of its black trunk are known as a mantle. Nicolas Hoizey“Alpine chalet above the Clarée valley” Alpine chalets are small dwellings usually found far from the main roads. They are often (but not always) reached by 4×4 in summer, and on foot, snowshoes or skis in winter. In the past, these chalets served as summer residences for the farmers and peasants of the Alpine valleys. During the coldest months of the year, the animals stayed in the cowsheds, but in the summer months, they and their carers moved to the higher alpine pastures. They were milked in the meadows, and the cheese was made on the spot. Nicolas Hoizey“Staying close” Lake Nakuru National Park lies deep in the Great Rift Valley. The park is a rhino sanctuary (both black and white) and a bird watchers’ paradise. In Kenya, the black rhinoceros population has fallen from 18,000-20,000 in 1970 to 511 in 1987, a decline of over 97 per cent. These ones are white rhinos, a little less endangered, and a lot less shy. Nicolas Hoizey“African Fish Eagle in Nakuru” The African fish eagle is a large species of eagle found throughout sub-Saharan Africa wherever large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply occur, like lake Nakuru. The adult is very distinctive in appearance with a mostly brown body with a white head like the bald eagle and large, powerful, black wings. Nicolas Hoizey“Common Ostrich” The ostriches of the Kenyan savannah have never been so prized: first by jockeys, who ride them to the delight of spectators, and then by meat lovers, their flesh being reputed to be healthy. These birds, which can reach up to 2.60 meters and weigh a hundred kilos, can kill with a single blow of their legs. The ban imposed at the end of 2003 on the sale of meat from wild animals, apart from ostrich and crocodile, has led to an increase in demand for ostrich meat, which is high in protein and low in cholesterol. Only the meat of the legs is marketed. Ostriches are slaughtered at the age of eight months to ensure that the meat is tender.
