Jules<p>There's a theme of others deciding what steps of transformation someone should make, in part because they feel they "deserve" that transformation. And there was a subplot I absolutely *hated*, and don't think it was handled well at all. The different alien cultures didn't always feel well developed.</p><p>A mixed bag, then. I remain curious but sceptical what the next one brings. </p><p>(The first Expanse book was also weak, but the series got a lot better!)</p><p>(5/n, n=5)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>... but are doing very different things with it. While "The Expanse" opens up on an epic scale, the crew getting involved in all kinds of high-stakes politics and war and exploration, Chambers focuses on her characters and tells a quiet story about them drinking tea, getting laid, and being nice to each other while major shit goes down in the background. </p><p>A little like a pastoral counterpart, the Eclogues to S.A. Corey's Aeneid.</p><p>(2/n)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>But. My main feeling remains "this isn't as woke as it thinks it is". See, Chambers *tries*. The world is queernorm, and PoC-norm. There are disabled people around, people are sensitive around each species' needs, and it's sex-positive, with no sexist crap going on. Nice, eh? </p><p>But. There's a neutral pronoun, but it's not used much, and a character is talked about with a wrong pronoun repeatedly. </p><p>(4/n)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>Becky Chambers' "The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet". So. </p><p>It owes much to "Firefly" (a bubbly femme engineer, for example), and is almost a complement to "The Expanse" (the first book in that series came out a year before this one did). They have a lot in common...</p><p>(ragtag spaceship crew doing blue-collar work ✓<br>idealistic captain with principles ✓<br>rich guys screwing everyone over ✓<br>rich kid running away from it ✓)</p><p>(1/n)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>It's an unusual choice, and certainly doesn't work for everyone (I desperately wanted to know more about the wormhole technology they're using, but it's just not that kind of book). But it's well executed and charming. </p><p>(I was surprised it was written before the Covid-19 pandemic, it feels so inspired by it: crises going on, and people hunker down and bake bread. But then again, we've been doing that for ages, haven't we.)</p><p>So, surprisingly idyllic. Nice!</p><p>(3/n)</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>Ah. It's always good for me to try and write reviews. Now I am thinking that while the Expanse is epic like the Aeneid, "A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet" is like the Eclogues: idyllic on one level, shepherds, er, spacers singing about love, but with major disruptive shit in the background.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"Aeluon women didn’t have breasts, but after meeting Pei, Ashby had found that he could do without."</p><p>Not even all human women have breasts, dude. And why would aliens have them? And that's up with them all having binary genders aligning with human sexuality?</p><p>Boring, and old-fashioned. It's practically a Star Trek level of worldbuilding.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"She’s a rashek. There’s not a word for it in Klip. She’s got a disorder that makes it difficult for her to interact with others. She has trouble understanding other people’s intentions. And she speaks oddly, that much was obvious when I first approached her."</p><p>They're aliens with different social needs, but I as an autistic person find random strangers "comforting" me as I must be terribly lonely and sad repulsive - from a personal and a disability rights perspective.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>This book is a lot more interested in food and community than in wormhole construction. </p><p>Which is okay, of course, but I'd love to hear more about their work! It's fascinating and skilled in a very interesting way! </p><p>I think maybe I need an inverted coffee shop AU of this? A hard sci fi AU?</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Nacho<p>34. </p><p><a href="https://frankenwolke.com/tags/booktodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>booktodon</span></a> <a href="https://frankenwolke.com/tags/libros" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>libros</span></a> <a href="https://frankenwolke.com/tags/cienciaficcion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cienciaficcion</span></a> <a href="https://frankenwolke.com/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"Corbin hated people, but he loved his work, and he was damn good at it. In Ashby’s book, that made him extremely valuable. An extremely valuable headache."</p><p>Ah, the genius asshole. Overdone cliché if there ever was one. </p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>"Building wormholes was not a glamorous profession."</p><p>Any sufficiently advanced technology will be a minimum wage job at some point. Eh.</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>Starts with a great proverb: </p><p>"From the ground, we stand; <br>From our ships, we live; <br>By the stars, we hope."</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
Jules<p>New book: Becky Chambers' "The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet". </p><p>Marketed as cosy, found-family sci-fi, which feels like something I need. As it's part one of the "Wayfarers" series, I'll label it thus, because I don't want to have a super long hashtag in there 😅</p><p><a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Wayfarers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayfarers</span></a> <a href="https://rheinhessen.social/tags/Books2025" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books2025</span></a></p>
