Linh Pham<p>New versions of the <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a> sites, including the Stats Page, Reports Site and Graphs Site, have been published and have a new retro-inspired "middle" color theme.</p><p>For more information and the inspiration for the new theme, check out the blog post.</p><p><a href="https://linhpham.org/blog/2025/wait-wait-stats-going-all-retro-sort-of/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">linhpham.org/blog/2025/wait-wa</span><span class="invisible">it-stats-going-all-retro-sort-of/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WWDTM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WWDTM</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>I now have a retro-inspired "middle" theme implemented for the Wait Wait Graphs Site, Reports Site and Stats Page applications with just a little bit of copy and paste between them.</p><p>The only difference for the Graphs Site is to create graph color schemes that (for the most part) use "web safe" and a couple of HTML named colors for the colorways. The heatmaps use the same color palettes, but applies a gradient due to the nature of the graph type.</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>And, they changed the URL format for nearly all of the shows after January 7, 2023.</p><p>Oh well, that's fine since I have the podcast files for those anyway.</p><p>Double <a href="https://linh.social/tags/sigh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sigh</span></a>... </p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>It looks like they stopped doing individual segments starting with the October 9, 2021 show.</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/sigh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sigh</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Previously, I didn't record segments such as Panel Questions and Lightning Fill-in-the-Blank in the description for each show I entered into the Wait Wait Stats Database.</p><p>I rue that decision and need to go back through shows to collect and enter that information. At least it'll give me a chance to use the new formatting that I've been using in the past year.</p><p>To help with that, I wrote a pretty janky Python script that downloads each segment audio file for each show since January 2006. I could use the podcast files, but I'd rather have individual segments that I can quickly zip through.</p><p>Fun...</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>I've detailed in a new blog post some of the latest updates to the Wait Wait Graphs Site, including a new color scheme and two new graphs, Wait Wait Reports Site and Wait Wait Stats Page.</p><p>Read more about those changes and other site updates:</p><p><a href="https://linhpham.org/blog/2025/wait-wait-stats-updates-july-2025-part-two/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">linhpham.org/blog/2025/wait-wa</span><span class="invisible">it-stats-updates-july-2025-part-two/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Hmm... Wait Wait is saying that this week's show will be the 100th show recorded at the Studebaker Theater. Unless if I'm missing or messed up something, I currently have 99 regular shows recorded there including this week's show. 🤔</p><p><a href="https://stats.wwdt.me/locations/studebaker-theater-chicago-il" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">stats.wwdt.me/locations/studeb</span><span class="invisible">aker-theater-chicago-il</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Although I am both saddened and angered by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" being canceled (and public media funding being gutted), I am still a little shocked and humbled by being mentioned on the show in 8 years ago for my Wait Wait Stats Project.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyHCIhFsZoA&amp;t=209s" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=NyHCIhFsZo</span><span class="invisible">A&amp;t=209s</span></a></p><p>(Pertinent part starts at the 3:29 mark)</p><p>*Edited YouTube link to a normal one vs a shortened URL</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>I've posted a copy of the notes that I've digitally taken for the Best Of <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> shows that I didn't have individual panelists entered for.</p><p>Yeah, I know, I'm using on Google Docs to share this (but not the canonical version).</p><p><a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sYes7V7ELjhjKNmsehEgV8NjQsvepYALKvD1mGz-Cko/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d</span><span class="invisible">/1sYes7V7ELjhjKNmsehEgV8NjQsvepYALKvD1mGz-Cko/edit?usp=sharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>I'm wrapping up listening to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! Best Of shows that I didn't have individual panelists entered into the Stats Database. So, I've been taking notes on panelists that I can pick out and the show date for those original clips and segments.</p><p>Of course, the last show of that group I'm listening to ends up being a show that I'm mentioned in for registering a random domain name a panelist blurted out 😜 </p><p><a href="https://www.npr.org/2011/08/27/139980804/mo-moments" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">npr.org/2011/08/27/139980804/m</span><span class="invisible">o-moments</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Listening to the 2009-08-22 Wait Wait Best Of Show, Carl Kasell said that one of the clips came from a May 2009 show when it actually came from a show a month earlier, 2009-04-11.</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Oops... at some point, MySQL replication broke between the two Wait Wait Stats Project production servers. Not sure what happened, but it's back up and running now.</p><p>🤦🏼 </p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>I've published a new blog post with some updates on the Wait Wait Stats Project, including version 4.0 of the Wait Wait Reports Site going live yesterday.</p><p><a href="https://linhpham.org/blog/2025/wait-wait-stats-update-july-2025/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">linhpham.org/blog/2025/wait-wa</span><span class="invisible">it-stats-update-july-2025/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>One of the tools that I have been using to determine the original show date and verify the panelists (although I can recognize most by voice, but there are some panelists that I haven't heard for a very long time) is the "Search Shows by Multiple Panelists" report that I build back in May 2022.</p><p>The report allows me to select 1, 2 or 3 panelists and it will return a list of shows they have in common.</p><p><a href="https://reports.wwdt.me/shows/search-shows-by-multiple-panelists" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">reports.wwdt.me/shows/search-s</span><span class="invisible">hows-by-multiple-panelists</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>It's times like these that I'm glad that I started taking some notes from the 1998 and 1999 <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWait" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWait</span></a> shows, including some details re: Bluff the Listener segment. I'm able to quickly narrow down the show that the Best Of segment comes from.</p><p>By the way, I've uploaded photos of each show notes that I've been taking over the past few years.</p><p><a href="https://flickr.com/photos/questionlp/albums/72157718939162790" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">flickr.com/photos/questionlp/a</span><span class="invisible">lbums/72157718939162790</span></a></p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Starting to go through previous <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWait" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWait</span></a> shows that I don't have panelists entered into the Stats Database. First up is the Best Of show from December 25, 2004.</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>Thankfully, I can tentatively include panelists for Best Of Not My Job guests.</p><p>Some Best Of shows only pull short segments from NMJ w/ minimal panelist interaction or include segments from un-aired shows. Those muddy up data collection a little.</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>When I took notes for those shows, it was before <a href="https://linh.social/tags/NPR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NPR</span></a> had any kind of transcription of the shows or the transcriptions didn't always note all of the panelists (especially for those speaking in the background or was spoken over by someone else).</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>I have been putting off re-listening through the <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitDontTellMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitDontTellMe</span></a> shows from 2000 onwards for some time.</p><p>I guess it was a good decision since I have 9 Best Of shows (technically 13, but 4 are repeats) where I need to collect panelist appearance information.</p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
Linh Pham<p>When I re-worked the hosting of the Wait Wait Stats Project by re-adding a caching proxy in front of the web app servers (that so happen to also host replicated copies of the Stats Database).</p><p>The name of the new server is based on a technical director of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Why I focused on the title "technical director" is that I used to manage Cisco LocalDirector load balancers.</p><p>The new server is basically a version of a local director, or in more modern technical terms... a load balancer.</p><p>🙃 </p><p><a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStats</span></a> <a href="https://linh.social/tags/WaitWaitStatsProject" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaitWaitStatsProject</span></a></p>
