Gallup's history began well before the city was founded in 1881 as a headquarters for the southern transcontinental rail route. The area was on a Native American trade route long before the City itself came along, once known as Na'Nizhoozhi, or "The Bridge" among the Navajo/Dine' people.

I have spent a lot of time wandering Gallup over the last few years. The town is known for being rough around the edges, but there is ample small town charm, friendly folks, and LOTS to see/do in the area.

A few shots of the Red Rock Balloon Rally balloon glows. The balloon glow is held at Red Rock Park on Friday night, with a bonfire and dancers (usually Zuni Pueblo and White Mountain Apache Crown dancers). The Saturday balloon glow is at Rio West Mall in Gallup. There is a parking fee at Red Rock Park, but no entrance fee for the rally and the balloon glow at the mall is free.
Heading to Gallup for Red Rock Balloon Rally this weekend. Starts tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 6. Mass ascension Fri, Sat, and Sun (depending on weather).
2021 was perfect. I didn't go in 2022 and the weather didn't cooperate at all last year, with snow, ice, and wind grounding the balloons all three days. Hopefully, Red Rock has the same good fortune as Fiesta 2024. Weather/wind report looks favorable.

The headline is misleading. Most of the article is about Gallup. El Morro & Zuni Pueblo is on Hwy 53 rather than Route 66.
