Paco Hope #resist<p>So my son and I visited <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/VirginiaTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VirginiaTech</span></a> this weekend as a prospective <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/CS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CS</span></a> major who i would start in Fall 2024. While we aren’t ruling them out, I’ll point out what I think are the pros and cons in case anyone cares.</p><p>Pros:<br>The school is clearly well funded. There is a huge emphasis on preparing to enter the workforce. Lots of intern, co-op, and hiring opportunities.<br>The Engineering school has a strong emphasis on really doing things. Building real, working prototypes in all engineering disciplines. I like that. <br>Lots of research funding and outstanding faculty. Clearly some incredibly smart folks. </p><p>Cons:<br>Windows and Java? The Eng School presenter emphasised having a Windows laptop and the early CS curriculum is focused on Java. My son is so far beyond this kind of thing it feels like preparing people for a life of mediocre enterprise drudgery.<br>VT CS seems to chase fads a bit. They have a “blocksburg” blockchain conference, a bunch of AR and VR stuff, and of course AI/ML. Everything felt either last decade, or pie-in-the-sky.<br>On-campus housing is only an option the first year. They are so oversubscribed that upperclassmen are essentially forced to live off campus.<br>It felt big. 30K+ students. 900+ clubs. Simultaneously they say this means you can “find your people” because there are so many great ways to connect, and it feels a bit overwhelming to my son.<br>Blacksburg. It’s middle of nowhere. 4-hour drive through cow pastures. T-Mobile advertises that they cover 99% of America. In <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Blacksburg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Blacksburg</span></a> you’re a member of the exclusive 1%.</p><p>I’m not trying to slag off VT. I know some brilliant people who went there and it obviously makes a lot of folks really happy. For my son and me, it just wasn’t a good fit.</p>
