Steve's Place<p>My little video chat code is about ready for testing. I put the user's video and controls on the left, everyone else's videos on the right, and haven't added any bells or whistles beyond muting video and/or audio across the platform, and also the ability to handle JWTs.</p><p>Meanwhile, this agora code is available in UE starting at 4.27, I think. Please do NOT add video chat to your RPG. I'm begging you.</p><p>Besides, based on their fees, less than a minute into a super-popular MMORPG, you'd owe enough to buy a Twitter.</p><p>"AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!"</p><p>"Jeez! What's wrong?"</p><p>"I opened a video chat inside of 'DungeonSlaughter II - Revenge Of The Bloody Stump,' and then Billy opened a video chat."</p><p>"So?"</p><p>"It keeps rebooting."</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.stevesworld.co/tags/UE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UE</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.stevesworld.co/tags/VideoChat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VideoChat</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.stevesworld.co/tags/coding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>coding</span></a></p>
1 tripod in 3 trenchcoats<p>We were testing <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/galene" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>galene</span></a> as an alternative to <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/discord" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>discord</span></a> video/voice-chat in online <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/ttrpg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ttrpg</span></a> sessions today. (In addition to <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/irc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>irc</span></a> as a chat that is)</p><p>It worked fine. Galene has really low ressource demands and we had multiple people in the chat on two continents with good quality video and multiple simultaneous screenshare windows at the same time. <br>If discord enshittifies too much I think we at least have a way to play our games.</p><p><a href="https://galene.org/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">galene.org/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/videochat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videochat</span></a></p>

Em :official_verified:<p>Tiny Privacy Tip for VideoChats 🔒✨:</p><p>If privacy is important to you, <br>it would be a good idea to move your conversations away from platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet to use a more privacy-respectful alternative.</p><p>One platform that is more privacy-respectful for videoconference is </p><p>Jitsi Meet: <a href="https://meet.jit.si" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">meet.jit.si</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>EDIT: Sadly, Jitsi just removed its anonymous feature for creating rooms. <br>It is still better than Zoom or Google Meet, but if you cannot self-host your Jitsi Meet server, read this first: <a href="https://jitsi.org/blog/authentication-on-meet-jit-si/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">jitsi.org/blog/authentication-</span><span class="invisible">on-meet-jit-si/</span></a></p><p>Jitsi Meet (still) has many benefits:</p><p>Open and Free :blobcatheart: <br>Jitsi Meet is open source and completely free! Here’s the code: <a href="https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>End-to-End Encrypted for One-on-One :blobs:<br>If you only chat with one person, chats are end-to-end encrypted. It is also fairly secure with more participants. More on Jitsi's security here: <a href="https://jitsi.org/security" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">jitsi.org/security</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Self-Host (if you want) :blobcatspace:<br>For additional privacy, you can setup your own Jitsi server, here’s how: <a href="https://jitsi.github.io/handbook/docs/devops-guide/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">jitsi.github.io/handbook/docs/</span><span class="invisible">devops-guide/</span></a></p><p>EDIT: With the recent changes to Jitsi Meet’s public server, I now recommend self-hosting to avoid having to use a third-party account in order to create a room. </p><p>Versatile and Simple <br>Nothing new to download, Jitsi Meet works with any browsers. You can also use Jitsi’s desktop or mobile app if you prefer!</p><p>Why use a platform that is <br>spying and tracking you and your interlocutors when you can use a free open-source more privacy-respecful alternative! :awesome:🔒</p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/VideoChat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VideoChat</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Zoom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zoom</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/JitsiMeet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JitsiMeet</span></a></p>
James Bartlett :terminal:<p>I have a minor gripe with modern video apps (<a href="https://techhub.social/tags/videoblogging" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videoblogging</span></a>, <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/videoconferencing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videoconferencing</span></a>, <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/videochat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>videochat</span></a>… basically every app where the user has a camera pointed at themselves, and the app renders a preview of the camera's perspective).</p><p>I've been using <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/webcams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>webcams</span></a> since the 640x480 days, and the early implementations were all set up very intuitively. The preview would always show a <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/MirrorImage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MirrorImage</span></a> of the camera's input, while the actual video, whether it was recorded, broadcast, or whatever, was left unmodified. This was great!</p><p>But sometime in the last decade or so, all the video apps started doing this annoying thing where they give the user an option to toggle the <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/mirroring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mirroring</span></a> effect, but that's exactly the problem – they treat it like any other effect! When you turn mirroring on, it's on for both your own preview AND for the actual video, and vice versa. </p><p>Why on earth did they do this? When I'm on a video call, I want my preview to be mirrored, but I want everyone else to see the unmodified video! 🤬</p>
