Mac<p>Ich habe letzte Woche zwei alte, ausgemusterte <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UniFi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UniFi</span></a> AP AC Pro WiFi-APs erhalten, deren ekelhaft klebrige Soft Touch-Oberflächen jede Menge Schmutz angenommen hatten. 🤢</p><p>Zwei alte Stofffetzen, eine nicht unerhebliche Menge Isopropanol, moderate Muskelkraft und vielleicht 20 bis 30 min investierte Lebenszeit später und die Teile sehen besser aus als neu. 🤩</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ubiquiti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ubiquiti</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Refurbishing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Refurbishing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SecondHand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SecondHand</span></a></p>
Gareth 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧<p>Today's WTF in Gareth's Network of Chaos.</p><p>I was running my whole home LAN off a single <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/Ubiquiti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ubiquiti</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/UniFi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UniFi</span></a> Express. It worked fine, although the UI was utter dogshit. Slow as balls.</p><p>I upgraded a few weeks ago to the new <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/DreamRouter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DreamRouter</span></a> 7. Holy shit, both the upgrade (take a backup of settings from the Express and restore it onto the new one, instant success!) and the performance of the UI were amazing.</p><p>Except for one thing. My Eufy doorbell wouldn't connect to the internet if I put it on my IoT VLAN (everything else that was running on that VLAN on the Express migrated to the Dream seamlessly). If I put it on the Guest network, it said it was on the Internet but I couldn't get to it via the app. I've just (while typing this) figured out that that's probably because even though I have the captive portal set to off, you do need to visit a web page and click a button the first time you join the network. I think this is dumb, but don't have enough guests for it to be a big problem.</p><p>So today, just for a laugh, I reset the Express and adopted it into the Dream Router as a mesh device.</p><p>And the doorbell connected to the Express on the IoT VLAN and immediately had internet connectivity again.</p><p>I've set that device to only use the Express which should keep it online going forwards, but seriously, WTF?</p>
Rae 🧑‍💻<p>Thinking about spinning up a secure, VLAN-isolated (and firewalled via <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/UniFi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UniFi</span></a>) VM on my <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Proxmox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Proxmox</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a> server to act as a public-facing edge node powered by <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Tailscale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tailscale</span></a> Funnel, custom domain, and Tailscale-issued TLS certs.</p><p>For routing multiple services (Gitea, SearXNG, blog, etc.) through Caddy, all sandboxed from my main tailnet + LAN. No open ports, no cloud VPS, no trust leaks.</p><p>Any thoughts?</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/selfhosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosting</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a></p>
Douglas<p>Huh that's cool. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/UnifiProtect" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UnifiProtect</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/unifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>unifi</span></a> from <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ubiquiti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ubiquiti</span></a> now supports 3rd party IP cams (at least for core features). That product had been a walled garden for many years.</p><p>It's probably not the right fit for my use case (more than a dozen Amcrest IP cams that I do local things with, have a video display of the live feeds, and push periodic snapshots to a website) but it's cool that this is a thing now.</p>
Douglas<p>I'm contemplating upgrading my parents router to a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Unifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Unifi</span></a> Dream Router 7. The issue I'm wrestling with is I've blown up a half dozen network switches and their current router has one dead port from some mystery issue somewhere in the wired network in their house. I have not had luck tracking down the problem and finally switched as many devices to wifi as I could</p><p>Maybe some ethernet-to-fiber boxes would be useful in electrically isolating the router completely from any other ethernet devices?</p>

Dismal Manor Gang<p>UI.COM support shop has a new automated tech that actually tries to help. Sbhe’s one for 2. Good with network, bad with voip. Replacing core switch as it has no spares. </p><p>New utility line is good for edge switches. They keep cost down by limiting POE to enough for a phone, an access point, &amp; a camera or 2. Michael B. Michael B. Michael Harley<p>Y'all why are the <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Reolink" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Reolink</span></a> cameras so much cheaper than <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Unifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Unifi</span></a> cameras?
