Aqueous #geochemistry this semester! We've moved from simple fluid-mineral equilibria to more complex models. As a teaching tool, I developed with help of our Uni's IT folks, an online portal to #USGS model software, WEB-PHREEQ. Anyone can use this.

Of course the students download the more capable desktop version for their projects (also, yes, I know there are more advanced portals out there). #geology

#Butterfly populations declining rapidly in #US with 22% disappearing in 2 decades
A comprehensive study found 22% of #butterflies in #UnitedStates disappeared between 2000 and 2020... The researchers behind the Science study used data from more than 12.6 million butterflies spanning 342 individual species, drawing from 76,000 surveys across 35 nationwide monitoring programs. Funded by the #USGS, the study was the first to integrate such a vast dataset, its authors said.

This sweet little #chickadee that I see regularly in my yard, has a deformed beak. After googling it, I discovered this is a condition called #akd avian keratin disorder. It was recommended that I report it to a research group at the #USGS Alaska division. (Interesting since I live in MA).

#Birds with this disorder seem to have higher mortality rates, but some do ok. This one is seemingly ok at the moment. It looks worse for wear because I snapped this #photo while it was sleeting.
