This was foreseeable. Want to go on vacation on the state's dime? Pull your kids out of school and get vouchers.

Reminds me of the time I saw my sister-in-law tell her first grader to read a book for a treat. That was her idea of teaching her kid how to read. Both she and my brother benefited from special education throughout their schooling. The state was fine with them homeschooling. I believe they were eventually convinced by her parents to send the kids back to school. My parents tried, but my brother cut them off.

So tonight I went to the #Norwich South hustings at #UEA.

Sadly Clive Lewis, current #Labour MP was a no show…they sent the local Labour councillor instead, who struggled to get from one end of a sentence to the other.

#Green Party candidate Jamie Osborn was very strong and well received…particularly on rent reforms, #Trans and #Non-binary rights and #Retrofit.

The #LibDem Sean Bennett was really solid and did well on #NHS and #EU…but crowd not receptive.

So what about Tory and Reform…

As a mum of twins on a low income whose partner is a librarian, I have spent years telling anyone who will listen of the huge social and health value that libraries bring to communities beyond being a building full of books.

It’s great to see that finally financially quantified…and a bit proud it’s #UEA in #Norwich carrying out this research!

The GuardianStudy finds English libraries generate at least £3.4bn in yearly value By Ella Creamer

Science academics may bring in bigger research grants, but #UEA’s jewels in its brutalist crown were always its environmental science and creative writing courses.

By swinging the axe overwhelmingly at the arts and humanities, their new VC could be creating a death spiral for these courses. So the courses remain for now - but when next year students decide to go elsewhere because of the cuts, I suspect another round of redundancies.

I would guess about a quarter of the conversations I have had with my partner over the past month have been about Sylvester the cat who roams all over UEA…he attends lectures, climbs into labs, goes to the library, but most importantly always has time for cuddles with students and staff!
