Election time, at last. Canada needs a government with a mandate to confront our current challenges, especially the #TrumpTariffs .

If you've read my posts on #CanPol in the past or my bio, you will not be surprised that I start the campaign with a strong preference for the #Conservative Party of Canada and #PierrePoilievre. In principle that could change, but it's unlikely. If that upsets or bores you, then I suggest muting me (or at least #elxn45 ) until May.

Q in French on “efficiency” department where he mentioned “AI” as a tool to gain efficiency. “What programs are you going to cut?”

“This is not about cutting, but about using private industry to make things quickly and efficiently”

Finally, he is asked why he hasn’t spoken to Trump. He says there are “conditions”… he is willing to talk to him.

And that’s it. I’ll end this thread. Canada is in an election! And of the minimum allowed under legislation! 36 days! Here we go!!

He has emphasized a number of times
“The need to act dramatically and act quickly.”

He is talking a lot about using the private sector to leverage public money.

Public Private Partnerships - Here we come!

He just tied Smith and Poillievre and Trump together quite well. “Americanization”. In French he says Poillievre is “Canadian Trump”.

He having some trouble going back and forth in French comfortably. This could become an issue in riding-rich Québec.

It's official. The election will be April 28.
Carney (on CBC online now) says "Trump wants to own us".

His main message is "together" and "positive".

"Negativity won't make Canada Strong"

"I love Canada. Our country has given me everything. I want to give it all back to Canadians"

He mentions Nanaimo! (where some of his family lives)

He is very... staid, almost sombre?

He wants complete Free Trade between all provinces/territories before Canada Day. (July 1)

A reporter asks in French Poillievre directly why his policies are similar to Trumps, and that this is a concern for voters.

He claims he is the opposite of Trump because he will make Canada stronger…

In English he doesn’t address the actual question.

THIS QUESTION IS HIS KRYPTONITE.

He is Trump.

Final Q: Why don’t you get security clearance.

“I won’t go into a Liberal process to determine what I can say”.

Another Trumpian line….

Continued thread

Hi English remarks were quite a bit shorter.

First Q: to Poillievre.

“Do you respect Donald Trump?”

“I respect the office of the President.”
“We have to work in a spirit of respect with all leaders.”

Second Q:
“Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says your policies would be more in line with the USA is that accurate”

… Electing Liberals will weaken the country for Trump. That is why Trump says he prefers Liberals.

His primary slogan is now: “Put Canada First for a Change”

Which… is a much weaker slogan than the axe the tax stuff.

Continued thread

Poillievre speaks at a launch rally just before Carney shows up at the GGs. He has only spoken French so far.

He is Trump… let me count the ways:

1) “Put Canada First”
2) “Bring Jobs Back to Canada”
3) “Weakened our Borders”
4) “[Liberal] radical globalist policies”
5) “Honour our history”
6) “Start building rather than filling out forms”
7) “Expel criminals. Expose fraudsters. We will limit immigration.” (He says he is opposed to 100 million population target? A dog whistle to Great Replacement?)

He just finished his stump speech in French and now has switched to the same in English.

Watching CBC coverage of the start of the election campaign. Carney will be visiting the Governor General (again) in an hour or so, to ask her to dissolve Parliament and begin the campaign. The expectation is a minimum campaign time, 36 days, final voting day April 28.

All the hits from the various parts of the country are looking pretty chilly. Not spring in the east yet!

I'm catching up on current events, and I recommend this video from Carney's press conference after his meeting with the Premiers. The scope of policy, planning, and detail in the first 15 minutes is impressive, without a single #PeePee like slogan. At the 15:20 mark, he addresses some of Trump's latest remarks and shows his leadership and toughness. Struggled with the French sections, my high school French is 5 decades old.

Joe Rogan says U.S. feud with Canada over tariffs 'is stupid'
nationalpost.com/news/canada/w

'He expressed pointed disagreement with Trump. “I don’t really think they should be our 51st state. There. I said it.”'

We Canadians can win this trade war. Of course Ds are against it, and it's bad for the stock market. But even many Americans sympathetic to Pres. Trump don't think attacking Canada makes sense.

nationalpost'Why are we upset at Canada? This is stupid,' says American podcaster Joe RoganRogan has made it clear that America needs to back off on the increasing international tension with Canada.

“The federal government on Friday launched a new ad campaign in the U.S. to remind Americans of the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods in the latest salvo in the deepening trade war.

The digital billboards read “Tariffs are a tax on hardworking Americans” and will be installed in Washington, D.C., and cities like Miami, Philadelphia, Detroit and Atlanta that Ottawa says would be “hardest hit” by the tariffs “due to their heavy reliance on trade with Canada.””
