William McInnes, as news manager Cunningham, is all this in a nutshell. <br>The story begins in January 1986. The more things change, the more they stay the same.</p><p>it’s not “entertaining”, but maybe it is something worthwhile just the same?</p><p>perhaps i’m in a better mood (post covid lockdown) but have given it another go, and must say i’m impressed with the writing so far (half way thru episode 2). Like baz luhrmann’s movie “Australia” it seems to have a lot of ouchiness and truth to it.</p><p>Anna Torv (as newsreader Helen Norville) and Sam Reid (as Dale Jennings) are giving fine, nuanced performances.</p><p>[Late Edit: key events of 1986 mentioned include space shuttle challenger; russell st bombing; halley’s comet; and lindy chamberlain trial (a truly foul episode in australian history). <br>AIDS is becoming a global issue, and so homophobia/ internalised homophobia are one of the themes in season 1 of The Newsreader. - the quality of this show has blown me away]</p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/k_0kxdPnEWg" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">youtu.be/k_0kxdPnEWg</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>?</p>
