Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>It looks like the employers NI increase may be the final straw for an adult care sector already in crisis.... while the immediate cause of a deepening crisis may be the NI increase, really the clear structural problem is an historic under-funding of adult social care.</p><p>So, while Rachel Reeves can be blamed for the next stage of this crisis, really its roots lie with previous Govts. and an unwillingness to fund the system adequately...</p><p>Its not looking good!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/SocialCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialCare</span></a> <br><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/mar/20/social-care-sector-faces-collapse-as-nics-and-wage-rises-loom-providers-warn" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/politics/2025/</span><span class="invisible">mar/20/social-care-sector-faces-collapse-as-nics-and-wage-rises-loom-providers-warn</span></a></p>

KB<p>“Labour had plenty of time to ponder social care.”</p><p>Not just social care. They had plenty of time—fourteen years!—to ponder the entire range of issues central to the wellbeing of the British people and economy. Or yet another bloody “commission” or “consultation”.</p><p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jan/05/labour-had-plenty-of-time-to-ponder-social-care-now-it-has-a-chance-to-deliver" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/commentisfree/</span><span class="invisible">2025/jan/05/labour-had-plenty-of-time-to-ponder-social-care-now-it-has-a-chance-to-deliver</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Labour" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Labour</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/SocialCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialCare</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Government" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Government</span></a></p>
Mike<p>With all the talk about social care in <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/ukpolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ukpolitics</span></a> at the moment there's an assumption that it only affects the elderly.</p><p>There's a huge number of people in social care who are not elderly and I seriously hope they are being considered by the government and it's review.</p><p>This includes people with severe and profound learning disabilities, as well as people with severe mental health issues needing care.</p><p>Our family experiences of moving from hospital care to care in the case of mental illness has been extremely mixed.</p><p>The common factor in all of this seems to be that Social Care is seen as a profit centre by a huge number of businesses - and I'm unconvinced that many of them have the interests of the clients at heart.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/SocialCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialCare</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/mentalhealth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mentalhealth</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/learningDisabilities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>learningDisabilities</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/socialCareReview" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>socialCareReview</span></a></p>

Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>Louise Casey has been appointed to head up a review of social care, which will report in three years time</p><p>However, given that we already know that a lot of the problem with social care is a lack of funding (there are also some prospects for reform), another review looks like an attempt to find a way out of the crisis without spending the money required.</p><p>However, reasonable &amp; wide-ranging the review is, without a major refinancing of social care, it will mean little!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/SocialCare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialCare</span></a> <br>h/t FT</p>
