Surely that's not right. Why on Earth would the backups be tied to the OS? Backups are app-level, data-level concerns. In addition to it being an unfamiliar experience for iOS users, part of our decision making to not build such a system for iOS was based on how much of a nightmare supporting such a system has been for the Android team, both technically making sure it continues to work with any backup file from any version as well as via our support channels where user’s just don’t understand at all how it works. The future for moving your data between devices in Signal likely looks like a choice between direct peer-to-peer transfer or restoration from some form of secure network storage.</p><p>Absolutely bonkers. "iOS users don't know what files are." Be so for real, y'all. And "version-tolerant data migration is hard" may be true. But y'all are the best-of-the-best, right? Y'all have tens of millions of dollars at your disposal every year, right? Forcing "Direct peer-to-peer transfer" so you can force equal versioning between the devices, and side-step that problem, is lazy. And "some form of secure network storage?" That's still "just a file," only abstracted away.</p><p>If nothing else, I suppose you *could* enable Signal Desktop from iOS, allow it to Sync, and then... you'd at least have some record of the data on your Desktop. I think they evolved into Verifying Key Servers (VKS), like the one run by a few folks from the OpenPGP ecosystem at <a href="https://keys.openpgp.org/about" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">keys.openpgp.org/about</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> . More generally, I believe that <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/PGP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PGP</span></a> / <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/GPG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GPG</span></a> / <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/OpenPGP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenPGP</span></a> retains important use-cases where accountability is prioritized, as contrasted with ecosystems (like <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/Matrix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Matrix</span></a>, <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/SignalMessenger" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SignalMessenger</span></a>) where deniability (and Perfect Forward Secrecy generally) is prioritized. Further, PGP can still serve to bootstrap those other ecosystems by way of signature notations (see the <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/KeyOxide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KeyOxide</span></a> project).</p><p>Ultimately, the needs of asynchronous and synchronous cryptographic systems are, at certain design points, mutually exclusive (in my amateur estimation, anyway). I don't think that implies that email encryption is somehow a dead-end or pointless. Email merely, by virtue of being an asynchronous protocol, cannot meaningfully offer PFS (or can it? Some smart people over at crypto.stackexchange.com seem to think there might be papers floating around that can get at it: <a href="https://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/9268/is-asynchronous-perfect-forward-secrecy-possible" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">crypto.stackexchange.com/quest</span><span class="invisible">ions/9268/is-asynchronous-perfect-forward-secrecy-possible</span></a>).</p><p>To me, the killer feature of PGP is actually not encryption per se. It's certification, signatures, and authentication/authorization. I'm more concerned with "so-and-so definitely said/attested to this" than "i need to keep what so-and-so said strictly private/confidential forever and ever." What smaller countries like Croatia have done with <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/PKI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PKI</span></a> leaves me green with envy.</p>

You can also route its traffic through tor by setting the `HTTP_PROXY` and `HTTPS_PROXY` environment variables appropriately. They don't break down their contributions by sources in their previous 990s, so it's possible (and, if this analysis is to be believed, highly likely: <a href="https://nelsonslog.wordpress.com/2023/12/08/signal-foundation-financials/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nelsonslog.wordpress.com/2023/</span><span class="invisible">12/08/signal-foundation-financials/</span></a>) that they are leaning heavily on their billionaire founder (Brian Acton) to keep the lights on. He's put 100 million USD into the foundation as "loans" (unsecured, zero percent interest), and significant portions have been forgiven/ "re-characterized as an inherent contribution" throughout the years. </p><p>Basically, Brian Acton acts as Signal Foundation's equivalent to Mozilla Foundation's Google. Hopefully, they can get enough ordinary users contributing on a regular basis to keep the lights on without needing to rely indefinitely on philanthropy. I think they can do it, even if it means nagging their users in-app periodically like the Wikimedia Foundation does with its Wikipedia banner ads.
