#TBT What might have been: The Socialist Labor Party was USA’s first socialist party, founded in 1876 as the Workingmen’s Party. It had some early success but would soon be overshadowed on the left by the Socialist Party of America and the Communist Party USA. But the SLP persevered and self-produced this documentary in 1990. IMHO a fascinating look at an alternative vision of American socialism. #Socialism #Marxism #Politics #USPol #History #SLP #SocialistLaborParty youtube.com/watch?v=V1GJvRaj7i

Question that the #linguistics #SLP or #trans community might be able to help with: Advice for learning to speak with a higher voice? Part of my challenge is not wanting to take up space (so I’m working on this in a different setting), but taking up space can be good. I’ve heard that getting out of my low voice would help me speak more clearly and project what I’m saying?

Morning quote: ‘“Language is a vulnerable cognitive function,” she says. “You can have many paths that will lead to a language disorder.” The diagnostic categories and groups people are placed into are “just artificial abstractions humans use to try and make sense of the world,” she says. The reality is “much messier and sloppier,” and the goal should be getting services to those who need them.’

Really gets to the heart of my own view on neurodevelopmental language impairment and language development in general. Language is a robust cultural tool tuned to our cognitive system- but it’s complexity makes it vulnerable to differences in capacity in ways that other areas of function are not.

A nice article about an important thinker.

It's #NationalSpeechLanguagePathologistDay where are my speech impediment kiddos at!? #SLPs do a lot more than speech work, but as a child with a very embarrassing speech impediment I can't describe how much they impacted my life.

Being able to communicate with adults and peers without ridicule changed my life, having a #SLP as a free resource at my school was so important. Lots of recognition and support to those in the profession today and always!

"Examining the Effects of Background Noise on Contextualized Word Learning"

Caitlin A. Ross, PhD, West Virginia University, 2021

"Previous studies have examined isolated word learning and some studies have manipulated noise levels. Yet, few, if any, studies have experimentally examined “real-life” noise effects on vocabulary learning when more contextual information is available to facilitate learning."

Had a shitty meeting with my child’s school #slp #sped director, and teacher about #neurodiverse affirming care, and why their constant questioning during remote sessions to try to force AAC usage is BS. It did not go well. #Education and therapists appear inextricably connected with #structuralableism forcing #ablednormalcy upon those of us who are #disabled and/or #neurodiverse I am grateful to read about this organization: therapistndc.org/advocacy/disa

A messy #introduction:

I think I'm a frustrated scientist & philosopher in between classifications that can't help me flourish.. yet?

I'm #Tagálog, #neurodivergent & a speech/language therapist from the #Philippines.

When possible, I question what we think we know about #agham (#science), #philosophy, #tech, #cognition, #linguistics, #SLP, #SLT, #neurodiversity using tools of #intersectionality, #DisCrit, #languaging, #feministSTS, etc.
