I’ve discovered one thing I love about commuting into the office:

THE LUNCH GROUP.

#Commuting sucks; #RemoteWork is great, and everyone should embrace it.

Having said that, no one has successfully emulated #lunch over the Internet.

Having lunch with a group of people in generally the same team/division/org, wrestling with similar challenges, is a valuable, humanizing thing. I’ve learned much about the people behind the commits, built relationships with coworkers, and absorbed technical wisdom beyond mere documentation.

But most importantly, lunch provides A ZONE OF PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY. This is a time when people can honestly air their grievances with no way for lawyers to later discover what was said. It affords taboos to be spoken, gossip to be spread, heresy to be shared, and value systems to be collectively and honestly applied to how the sausage is made, with little fear of retaliation. It allows us to be more fully human.

I haven’t found anything that replicates this. Not remotely.

Scientists have been studying remote work for four years and have reached a very clear conclusion: “Working from home makes us happier.”


I'm grateful that my employer continues to allow us to work completely from home., though there are times I wish we had an office to pop in and engage in ad-hoc conversations with my teammates...

Noisy at the casa today as I work, lawn folk are here with a riding mower, push mower, and weed eating all going at once, plus local helicopter company is apparently doing test flights over the neighborhood ("test" flights over populated areas, sounds safe to me, right?) and they've all converged. A bit hard to focus on tasks at hand, taking a #tea break. Hopefully only last 5-10 minutes.

To allow my work computer to function on my home’s network, I have to use the company defaults, which are LESS SECURE than my network allows.

One of the many things I enjoy about my work routines as a distributed knowledge (Web) worker: My daily commute to help me re-charge my batteries and energy levels heh
