Echo & the Bunnymen, “Bedbugs and Ballyhoo” 1985

With this track, originally released as the B-side to their single “Bring On the Dancing Horses," #EchoAndTheBunnymen wear their Doors influence on their sleeves. When they rerecorded it for their eponymous full length release two years later, #RayManzarek himself added organ and it fits perfectly. Many prefer the earlier, leaner version, the last recording with that fresh, earnest (lower budget?) Bunnymen charm, but I also love the way the arguably more commercial 1987 Bunnymen came roaring out of my speakers, and find it hard to pick.

After initially dismissing the lyrics as delightful nonsense, I've come to think there’s meaning lurking here (Colonization, anyone?) but I often listen untroubled by analysis, just letting the swirling Liverpudlian post-punk incense and peppermint wash over me.

I accidentality watched the 1993 induction of the Doors in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (:youtube: youtube.com/watch?v=rs4Po4Yric). Co-founder of the Doors Ray Manzarek (1939-2013, :wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Manz) called the Reagan/Bush Sr. administration fascists. I absolutely agree and I'm happy for Ray that he didn’t had to endure the ultra-fascists who are now in office. Overton window in full effect here!

But don't forget that a lot of people (especially men) who were getting high on the Doors in the summer of 1967, voted for #Trump. Probably a lot of them because they were very disappointed about Clinton, Obama and Biden. But that's still not a reason to vote for Trump! Ray turns over in his grave. And Jim as well!

Morrison Hotel
