A round of Planter’s Punch tonight with my preferred high hogo blend, 2 parts Coruba, 1 part Hamilton Pot Still Jamaican Black, 1 part Plantation/Planteray O.F.T.D.

This blend pretty closely matches the 97% abv of vintage Dagger Punch Rum, the mid century tiki mainstay from J. Wray & Nephew. Whether it represents the flavor profile is hard to say, since I have no vintage Dagger to compare.

I use Stephen Remsberg’s recipe, but dial back to 2.5 oz rum due to the higher abv of my blend.

Another hot day, another #rum beverage…
A Navy Grog in the best one I’ve ever had, made by Garret Richard in the Slowly Shirley days.
He combined the Donn Beach at Victor Bergeron styles meaning a split of honey syrup and pimento dram, and used a split of El Dorado 8, Denizen Merchant’s Reserve, and Appleton 12.
Use the original recipe as a template with those ingredients and you’ll come close.

NAVY GROGU

¾ oz lime juice
¾ oz pineapple juice
¼ oz SC Mai Tai syrup
a few drops of blue curaçao
¼ oz allspice dram
¼ oz falernum
1 oz overproof Pot Still Lightly Aged Rum ❶
1 oz Rhum Agricole Blanc ❼

Garnish: lime wedge, maraschino cherry
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake, open pour, and top with more ice. Spear two cherries for the eyes, and use two lime wedges as your garnish so it looks as if the Force is strong with this one.

April's cocktail pie - Strawberry Mojito Impossible Pie

I was feeeeling strawberries this month, so I've gone for a Strawberry Mojito - made with white rum, lime juice, mint, strawberries, sugar and soda water.

My pie is a self-crusting(!) rum and lime custard pie, piled high with fresh strawberries and mint, and drizzled with a mint-lime glaze.

PIÑATA

3 oz pineapple juice
1 oz lemon juice
¼ oz SC demerara syrup
1 oz ginger liqueur
½ oz St. Elizabeth allspice dram
1 oz Black Blended Rum ❺
1 oz Blended Lightly Aged Rum ❷

Garnish: grated nutmeg
Method: Add all the ingredients to a drink mixer tin. Fill with 12 ounces of crushed ice and 4 to 6 agitator cubes. Flash blend and open pour into a hollowed-out pineapple. Garnish with grated nutmeg.

A real job to hollow out the pineapple, but the fun vessel makes it worth it! Also no harm in throwing an extra straw in there for a party of two who won't mind sharing.

¾ oz passion fruit syrup
¼ oz coconut cream
½ oz absinthe
1 oz Blended Lightly Aged Rum ❷
1 oz Blended Aged Rum ❸
Float of overproof Pot Still Unaged Rum

Garnish: mint sprig, lime wheel
Method: Combine all ingredients except rum for the float in a shaker with crushed ice and shake. Open pour into glass, top with ice, float the rum, and garnish.

A lovely potion that can please everyone on the tiki spectrum: tame enough for a beginner, but still has enough in there to interest a veteran. Original by theweekendmixologist on IG.
