One of my best friends is blind, and I like to see her properly supported in her online experience. </p><p>But sometimes it works to ask people to edit posts to add alt text on images. Not everyone knows about alt text at all, and some people who try to include it forget sometimes, or don't realize they can edit it in after the fact. I try to always assume that this error, when it happens, is not an intentional slight, and so is a learning opportunity. And especially where good content would otherwise be lost, it seems worth the effort.</p><p>Mastodon has user preferences to make the absence of alt text show up visibly or to just filter out things that lack alt text ... BUT (strangely) it has no preference I can find that says "warn me if I'm posting something that would need such a flag". There should be such a preference and it should default to ON.</p><p>I consider it a major faux pas in design to beat someone up for something technologically when you could have just dissuaded or prevented the bad thing with an equal application of technology.</p><p><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Preferences" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Preferences</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/UserPreferences" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UserPreferences</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/UI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UI</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/UX" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UX</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/WebAccessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WebAccessibility</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/AltText" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AltText</span></a></p>

personally<p>Aesthetics of musical timing: Culture and expertise affect preferences for isochrony but not synchrony</p><p>Have you ever thought about how your cultural background and expertise can influence your appreciation of deviations from synchrony and isochrony in music? A recent study aimed to explore this by manipulating (a)synchrony and (non-)isochrony in musical excerpts from three different styles and examining the responses of participants with varying levels of cultural familiarity and expertise. The results showed that while there was an overall preference for synchrony, preferences for deviations from isochrony were culturally contingent and dependent on expertise. This suggests that our ability to process musical timing relies on both low-level and high-level perception, and that cultural familiarity and expertise play a role in shaping our aesthetic preferences. So, the next time you listen to music, consider how your cultural background and expertise might be influencing your enjoyment of the piece.</p><p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cognition.2022.105205" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">doi.org/10.1016/j.cognition.20</span><span class="invisible">22.105205</span></a></p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/expertise" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>expertise</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/preferences" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>preferences</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/familiarity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>familiarity</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/deviations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>deviations</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/perception" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>perception</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/appreciations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>appreciations</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/haping" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>haping</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/synchrony" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>synchrony</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/excerpts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>excerpts</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/background" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>background</span></a> Export keywords <a href="https://c.im/tags/jazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jazz</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p>
