Hello #fediverse who among you is using #ubuntustudio ? Or another music recording friendly #distro .

Looking for advise, tips for #MultiTrack band rehearsal recording and #preproduction

How is the driver support? Will i be able to install a #Tascam US18x8 #AudioInterface ?

Is 32bit float a hype or the way to go?

Thinking of using #Bandlab so everyone can access the tracks from home. That worked with previous phone recording during Covid.

Time for a quick #ProductionDiary Update! I'm basically back in #PreProduction, or more accurately in a hybrid preproduction/writing phase. Set up another jam last night and it was really flowing, sounded great. Going to do another performance of it tonight, then start another new one ... Finally feels like progress instead of treading water.

But despite that, I knew I would be able to make enough material to do an album around this concept, and I started combing through notebooks for title ideas and running them through the Night Cafe's Stable Diffusion model and started planning the schedule for the album. I started #PreProduction officially like three or four days later I want to say.

And more to the point, worked well with the song's concept/title. By the end of the time I worked on this in #recording (day 6 or 7 overall) I had settled on its title and the accompanying #AI #image I used as #inspiration and #guidance for making the song. (If this is mystifying, check out my #PreProduction posts about the use of AI pics in the #songwriting process.)

The title is "The Waking World Pushes Its Way Into Dreams" and this is the image:

I did have two more quasi #InstrumentDays. One day with a couple of #Morphagene patches that absolutely pushed two tracks over the finish line almost single handedly, and a #SamplingDay where I finally went through one side of the #SamplingTape I made in #PreProduction and added #samples to multiple tracks. Those samples were the finishing touch for at least one of those tracks and it was nice to know the effort had been worth it.

Back to my #PsychedelicGhostStories #ProductionDiary! After extensive coverage of #PreProduction, it's time to delve into the actual #writing and #recording of the #album. If you need to catch up on the previous posts before we get started, use the hashtags "PsychedelicGhostStories" and "ProductionDiary" together -- those are all part of this series. And hey, here's the album in question. #Listen along!

Okay, back from lunch ready to get going on this #ProductionDiary for #PsychedelicGhostStories . However, contrary to what I said before lunch, I want to stay in #PreProduction for now -- specifically, it's time to get into the #writing process, and the approach I used. Not going to lie, I am a touch concerned this is going to be #controversial because my writing and #inspiration process made *heavy* use of the dreaded... #AIArt *GASP*

During all this, I was also working on charting out the #thematic and #musical elements, but I am going to go into that in a different post. It's definitely part of the #PreProduction but it's tied much more closely to the #writing and #composition than the #production, so I'd like to keep it separate for people who are only interested in one or the other. And also because they are separate in my mind.

Well, this is now a very long thread so it seems like a good place to leave it for the night. I will start a new thread tomorrow (or very soon) with the same #PsychedelicGhostStories and #ProductionDiary tags. I'll wrap up #PreProduction and get into the #recording of the album.

In the meantime, here's the album in question, for reference:

Starting from the top: This is an #MPC album. I am committed to the DAWless thing -- though the MPCs are more like a DAW in a Box, really -- and wanted to reaffirm that commitment and focus my brain on the possibilities of the machine, so any time I wasn't sure I wanted to do something a non-MPC way, I did it the MPC Way. Ultimately I decided to mix and master entirely within my #MPCOne. The album you hear came out of the MPC that way.

In terms of #TechnicalPhilosophy, I wrote down three #guidelines (I developed/realized/formalized two more later, once recording was in process; I'll talk about those as part of the recording process). Those were:

1) This is an #MPC album. We will write and assemble it in the MPC.
2) Record it by bit, layer by layer; writing is a process of accretion/sedimentary.
3) This is a drum machine album; driven by drum machine beats+composition

I made a list of stuff that had to be done to make this work. From basic stuff like a plan to #update all my #firmware and clean my #tapeheads to working out #sample sets, #drum sound palettes, and #synth patches to writing out my #themes and #charting the #influences I wanted to incorporate. (I have PAGES of notes generated during this process. Would be good to get #feedback on how deep I should go here.)
