This is because a PDS is decoupled from relays and the firehose, whereas <a class="hashtag" href="https://atomicpoet.org/tag/mastodon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mastodon</a> or <a class="hashtag" href="https://atomicpoet.org/tag/pixelfed" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Pixelfed</a> servers, for example, are not.</p><p>There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches.
