As I mentioned in one of my previous posts (or maybe multiple ones), my note taking tool of choice is Joplin, because of its flexibility, customizability. I did quite a lot of customization on it, including some CSS styles for the UI of the program itself, and the rendered notes, to make things more visible, prettier, and also included workarounds for some rendering issues. I also like to use the plugin called Templates with a template I made to create study notes from.

I decided to share these things with you, maybe some of you will find them useful too.

You can find detailed description of what's included, and how to use the config in the README.

If you have a way that you read books on a Mac, and are able to export the highlights, can you let me know? The formats I can use for this are either EPUB or PDF.

Things I've tried:
Apple Books highlights are terrible, full of character errors and copyright notices after each one, so please don't suggest that option.

Calibre reader: Can't see how to export highlights, also formats textbooks terribly.

Feel free to boost!

Now the subtitle—in addition to showing the timestamps—contains a location pin icon for the origin GPS coordinates, and a globe icon for the last modified version GPS coordinates.

These are set manually, just to keep things more intentional and optimized, via two new ViewToolbar buttons: fetch current coordinates (for the most recent coordinates) … and set created coordinates, which will populate fields for a tiddler's origin coords.

Brave open sources Cookiecrumbler, an AI-powered tool to automatically detect and block cookie consent banners, currently running on Brave servers, with plans to move it to the browser:

Kdenlive 25.04 released with AI-powered background removal plugin, OpenTimelineIO import/export, refactored audio thumbnail system, ability to change the duration of multiple adjacent clips in a single action and more:
alternativeto.net/news/2025/4/
(That background removal tool is actually a pretty good use of AI, and it runs locally, so no need to give Kdenlive Internet access.)
(The ability to change duration of multiple clips at once is also pretty useful, I might attempt to update Kdenlive to get that feature, and hope it doesn't break lol.)

Joplin 3.3 released with various accessibility improvements (keyboard navigation, screen reader support, higher contrast UI elements etc.), option to collapse or expand all notebook hierarchies with a single button, run multiple independent instances for better workspace management on desktop, new search dialog for quick linking of notes, Markdown auto-replacement in Rich Text Editor, improved focus handling in modals on mobile, support for attaching audio recordings to notes and enhanced voice typing on Android, redesigned "New Note" menu:

AdGuard's CLI adblocker for Linux reached version 1.0, includes app exclusion feature, differential filter updating, interactive setup wizard:

OpenBSD 7.7 released with performance boosts, expanded hardware support, support for Scalable Vector Extension (SVE) and enabling PAC on hardware with the new QARMA3 cipher, improved support for running the system in QEMU, kernel improvements etc.:

BetaNews · Brave open sources Cookiecrumbler to make cookie consent blocking smarterBrave just made a move that should make privacy enthusiasts pretty happy. The company has officially open sourced Cookiecrumbler, a tool designed to automatically detect and help block those obnoxious cookie consent banners you see across the Web. These pop-ups are not only annoying but, according to research, often track users even when they click reject. Cookiecrumbler aims to stop that nonsense while avoiding the headaches that can come with sloppy blocking rules.

Only because I couldn't find one that worked the way I wanted it to, I wrote Yet Another Note Making App. Entirely CLI. It may work for you too.

Whilst I thank for the numerous good work you've done - is there any plan to implement a keyboard shortcut to switch between markdown editor and rich text editor? (Not the ctrl L to switch between preview and you panels)

Any discussion I've found, old or new, are simply "you are out of luck".

There are many cases where a document works better in a specific editor mode.

On keeping a zibaldone - L'Atelier Nomade

"Zibaldone means a heap of things or miscellany in Italian. They date back to antiquity and were kept particularly during the Renaissance and in the nineteenth century. Such books are essentially scrapbooks filled with items of every kind: recipes, quotes, letters, poems, tables, proverbs, prayers, legal formulas …"

So, in our last post, we talked about Joplin, this open-source note-taking program created by the talented Laurent Cozic. 🇫🇷

One of us use Joplin for many years, first at work and later in personal computer too. Because we like it, we decided to tell about it today. 😀

We found a really interesting interview with him about the product philosophy behind Joplin, which we'd love to share with you.

In this interview, Laurent talks about why he chose to make Joplin open source, the focus on privacy and security, and what the future might hold for Joplin.

He also talks about how he uses Joplin for work and for personal use, and he has some recommendations for people who are just starting out with it.

You can read the interview here:

A last thing... Laurent works a lot on this project, and... for free! 👏

So if you'd like to send a donation to the project, you can do so here: joplinapp.org/donate (they accept Bank Transfer, PayPal, Patreon, Liberaply and Github Sponsor).

...or you can consider rating the app on Google Play or App Store. 🙂

Do you know JOPLIN? It's a nice European alternative to apps like Evernote, Google Keep, Notion, Microsoft OneNote.

Joplin is a free, open source note-taking and to-do application, which can handle a large number of notes organised into notebooks. You can search your notes, copy them, tag them and modify them either from the app itself or from your own text editor. The notes are in Markdown format, which is great.

It was created by Laurent Cozic 🇫🇷 back in 2016 as an alternative to Evernote. It's cloud service is hosted in Paris, France. They focus on privacy, security and transparency.

It's open source and offline-first, so you can always access your data on the device, even when you're not connected to the internet.

It's got all the basics you'd expect, and you can also attach images, videos, audio files and PDFs to your notebooks.

There's a huge community of people who have made extra features possible with their plugins.

It's also super easy to export and import your files, which is great if you're worried about vendor lock-in.

The handy web clipper extension lets you save web pages or take screenshots in the browser and save them to your notes.
