Steve Purcell<p>The very hacky source code is on GitHub: my <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a> VPS includes the Nix flake there into its configuration to run the 14Mb self-contained binary that the build produces. cloc reports ~330 lines of <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/ocaml" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ocaml</span></a> for the whole thing. <a href="https://github.com/purcell/purcellimages2" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/purcell/purcellimag</span><span class="invisible">es2</span></a></p>
Steve Purcell<p>I got my old photo site up and running again, rewritten in a very minimal way using <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/ocaml" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ocaml</span></a>, and declaratively built and configured using <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/nix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nix</span></a> &amp; <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a>. 🚀 Here's an example photo: <a href="https://www.purcellimages.com/galleries/prints/615" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">purcellimages.com/galleries/pr</span><span class="invisible">ints/615</span></a></p>

Mike :nixos:<p>This is awesome. I love getting <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> out there in the real world :)</p><p>This is an article / interview my local library system did on me and the upcycling i've been up to for the past 5 years.</p><p><a href="https://trl.org/blogs/post/closing-the-digital-divide-qa-with-local-computer-upcycler-mike-kelly/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">trl.org/blogs/post/closing-the</span><span class="invisible">-digital-divide-qa-with-local-computer-upcycler-mike-kelly/</span></a></p>
Michael Stapelberg 🐧🐹😺<p>It only took me *checks date and clock* over 5 hours, but I now have a (work-in-progress, but working!) package.nix for Threema Desktop 2.0!</p><p>This is an electron app, which loads multiple modules: libthreema, a Rust library that compiles to WASM, a (slightly patched) sqlite version and an argon2 library.</p><p>Still need to clean this up before I can submit it as a <a href="https://mas.to/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a> PR…</p>
Beau Simensen<p>So, it turns out the nix configuration I was using doesn't play well with pkgs.php.buildEnv. While this method allows me to add extensions from nixpkgs, the bundled pecl and pear are hardcoded to the PHP without the extensions in the nix store.</p><p>Is anyone out here involved in the nix + PHP ecosystem? I have... questions. :)</p><p><a href="https://phpc.social/@beausimensen/114948176280140467" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">phpc.social/@beausimensen/1149</span><span class="invisible">48176280140467</span></a></p><p><a href="https://phpc.social/tags/nix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nix</span></a> <a href="https://phpc.social/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> <a href="https://phpc.social/tags/php" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>php</span></a></p>
Mike :nixos:<p>Well, it's official! The very first <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixbook</span></a> installer is now live and completely works!</p><p>Now you can download an iso, boot to it, and install Nixbook or Nixbook Lite, reboot and you're good forever!</p><p>For those who don't know, Nixbook is basically a super easy to use <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linuxmint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linuxmint</span></a> type clone built in <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> with automatic updates and upgrades for non technical / technical users alike!</p><p><a href="https://github.com/mkellyxp/nixbook/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/mkellyxp/nixbook/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Karl Voit :emacs: :orgmode:<p>During the last 2 years with <a href="https://graz.social/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a>, I've mentioned multiple times that my system performance is very poor on my backup notebook: Lenovo <a href="https://graz.social/tags/X260" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>X260</span></a> with a 2y old crucial 2TB SATA SSD BX500 2.5"</p><p>After setting it up with Debian 13 on the 2TB SSD as well as on the original 250GB SSD, I have to say that the 2TB SSD seems to be the culprit: the system behaves very weird with sluggish waiting/resume/..., system updates take hours instead of minutes, ...</p><p>So it wasn't NixOS, but the 2TB SATA SSD. 😔 </p><p>However, I'm glad to get rid of NixOS step by step anyway for other reasons, being able to run Python scripts again being the most important to me. (Please don't give me any Nix-python advice anymore, I've spent too many days on that issue without a sustainable fix.)</p><p><a href="https://graz.social/tags/ThinkpadX260" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ThinkpadX260</span></a></p>
Mike :nixos:<p>Ok, team <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> assemble!!</p><p>With lots of help, I've had great success customizing the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> installer to install <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixbook</span></a> after the base install.</p><p>However, the FINAL part is wanting to install a few <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/flatpak" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flatpak</span></a> at the same time.</p><p>The flathub remote adds fine, but the flatpaks won't install because there is no dbus service in this chroot (nixos_enter) environment.</p><p>Please tell me there is a way around this?!?! Id rather have it done here instead of trying to wire something on first boot.</p>
Mike :nixos:<p>Massive thanks to MatthieuBarthel on GitHub (not sure if they're here). </p><p>This is the most progress we've had on a dedicated installer, being able to select the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixbook</span></a> version, and it runs the install script after. </p><p>So. Cool. Being able to customize the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a> installer like this. </p><p>Few little tweaks and some issues with flatpak installing, but so close to something shippable!</p>
