RossSThere has been some noctilucent clouds (NLCs) the last couple nights, with Sunday's display being pretty amazing...a few shots from both nights. For some moments, I thought it might have been starting to happen this evening. But it was a trick of the eye, with gaps in darker lower clouds looking brighter in comparison. It would need to become fully-illuminated white to be <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/NLC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#NLC</a>. This was tonight's view from northeast Portland, Oregon. Some darker low clouds are with local incoming weather. It was remarkable to spot it in the June 9, 2019 outbreak from 37°N! Now that I live in Portland, Oregon, it's more likely to see from 45.5°N. I wasn't looking for them. There was an outbreak on June 9, 2019 which brought them all the way down to central California. I spotted them during a night bicycle ride, and recognized I should not normally be seeing sunlight on any clouds that late. Astro Hawk (Ian Kluft) ✅🚀🛰️To recognize <a href="https://spacey.space/tags/NoctilucentClouds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#NoctilucentClouds</a>, it has to be white to electric blue light reflecting on thin clouds around an hour after sunset or before sunrise when the sun is well below the horizon. These mysterious clouds are at 80km/50mi altitude (80% of the way to space) making them very difficult to research, and therefore not well understood. JanPVWe've reached that point in the summer when it's time to hunt for the first, for the moment, likely weak noctilucent clouds.Forming at 82km, clouds of ice coating nanometere-sized meteoric debris catch the sun that is well below the local horizon. Try between 02:15 and 03BST, looking N to NE. Shift earlier by a few minutes up to the solstice.
