Mike Stone<p>Oh, and my daughters would really like a a female sounding wake word other than Alexa. My sons don't seem to care, they all are happy with Mycroft. That's probably because I've been using Mycroft since <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> was mycroft.ai. I'm partial to Selene, but that's only because it's from the same novel as Mycroft. Also, I realize I could create my own wake word. I might even do that if the alarm functionality gets added. 😉 </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@homeassistant" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>homeassistant</span></a></span></p>
Mike Stone<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://social.wildeboer.net/@jwildeboer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>jwildeboer</span></a></span> I believe it's <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://dair-community.social/@emilymbender" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>emilymbender</span></a></span> that refers to LLMs as "text extruders", which is a turn of phrase I like. Where I see LLMs being potentially useful is for an idea I remember from the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> days they called Personas. The idea was that their voice assistant could be given particular "personalities" It was also something i remember from the Ready Player One book (not the movie). LLMs could reduce persona responses down to some system prompts.</p>
Mike Stone<p>Just dug out my old <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/PinebookPro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PinebookPro</span></a>. It's so far out of date it'll probably be faster to just backup the files and start it from scratch. It still has an old install of <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> on it.</p>
Mike Stone<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@grueproof" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>grueproof</span></a></span> I don't know how much attention you pay to <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a>, but last year was their "Year of the Voice". They added a significant amount of functionality that replicates what <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> was doing. The one I've been super tempted by lately is this little guy:</p><p><a href="https://www.home-assistant.io/voice-pe/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">home-assistant.io/voice-pe/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>Still obviously a Preview Edition (it's in the name after all), but looks pretty slick regardless. I've got other hardware running around the house that interfaces with HA, but not as smoothly.</p>
Mike Stone<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@grueproof" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>grueproof</span></a></span> I guess that depends on what you mean by "replacement". For my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> Mark II I replaced the OS with Neon, which worked really well.</p><p><a href="https://neon.ai/NeonAIforMycroftMarkII/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">neon.ai/NeonAIforMycroftMarkII</span><span class="invisible">/</span></a></p><p>I also ran Mycroft directly on my PCs, but Neon isn't as good at that. I replaced those installations with ollama, which works fine-ish but like most LLMs is out of date on current information, but works for general questions. </p><p>Regarding hardware, I've been using a variety of different things, all tied to <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a>.</p>
Mike Stone<p>I just reimaged my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> Mark 2 with the latest Neon AI because..... it's Friday and I wanted to?</p>
popey<p>Golly, it's coming up on six years since "What are beans?"</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5J7vVQNkCw" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=D5J7vVQNkC</span><span class="invisible">w</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mycroft</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ai</span></a></p>
Mike Stone<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://social.librem.one/@golemwire" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>golemwire</span></a></span> I'm not familiar with spd-say, but espeak absolutely would. I'll assume they both would. I'm just more familiar with piper. I played around a lot with the old <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> assistant, both on dedicated hardware and running on my computer. It used Mimic for it's TTS. It's primary developer was Michael Hansen, who also developed Piper. It's also the engine that's built into my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> setup. And who doesn't love having Popey read your news to you?</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@MobileOak" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>MobileOak</span></a></span></p>
Mike Stone<p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/OKNabu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OKNabu</span></a>, are there plans for a "Mycroft" wake word for on device wait word detection on the S3 Box 3? I've grown kinda attached to it over the years.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> </p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@homeassistant" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>homeassistant</span></a></span></p>
Mike Stone<p>This is one of the reasons I've been a big supporter of <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> in the past, and I'm still supporting <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/OVOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OVOS</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/NeonAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NeonAI</span></a>. I think a voice driven UI (VUI) is important, but the biggest players in that market are Google and Amazon, and their motivation isn't improving the experience for the people using their devices, it's monetizing anything and everything they can. I'd love to see a new smart speaker (*cough* <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@PINE64" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>PINE64</span></a></span> *cough*) that would support OVOS or NeonAI soon.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/amazon-wants-to-charge-a-subscription-fee-for-alexa-eventually/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/0</span><span class="invisible">9/amazon-wants-to-charge-a-subscription-fee-for-alexa-eventually/</span></a></p>
Mike Stone<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@JoeRess" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>JoeRess</span></a></span> Just finished the episode. Regarding <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Mycroft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mycroft</span></a> there's some good news. About the same time Michael Lewis was announcing the bad news, Mark II and Dev Kit owners received an email offering a free USB drive for Neon OS. Neon has OFFICIALLY partnered with Mycroft. NeonOS is based off the Mycroft core code, and the USB is a drop in replacement for the one that came with the Mark II. People who bought the device can get the key for free, or it can be ordered for $20. </p><p><a href="https://neon.ai/NeonAIforMycroftMarkII" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">neon.ai/NeonAIforMycroftMarkII</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
