As Fediverse knows odd things...

Where (UK) can I buy a microscope?

I don't want to spend a lot, nor do I need anything fancy. Just a step up in quality from the cheap plastic Early Learning Centre one I have.

Second hand would be perfect. EBay has many, but I've no way of knowing if they're any good.

In my head, I'm picturing the solid, heavy things I used to use at school. One that old would, I'm sure, be fine.

Any suggestions?

But first, this thing hadn't been used for years, so I had to clean it a bit. Maybe it was also just an excuse to understand how this thing works :)

It's an inverted design and has two optical paths, one for the binoculars and one for the camera.

Peeps! Peeps! A #science win from #Scotland! 🎉

Three hours to build. £50. Huge win. 💪

"The #microscope demonstrated sub-cellular resolution, clearly imaging individual red blood cells & detailed structures in the kidney sample" - so not just cool, actually usable for diagnostics.

Yay! Late night work here. Decided to put a petal from the wilting sunflower in the yard under the microscope. Unlike most of the previous microscope shots I've posted here the past few days, this one was lit "through" and not "on" (I use an old microscope and I use a desk lamp to direct the light onto the specimen). I've changed some factors in the whole set, so probably the magnification here is about 320X; 10X for objective, 10X for eyepiece, 3.2X for the camera and lens combination.
Done with focus-stacking, but as usual, it's not that smooth (and as you can see, had to crop large areas out). I've stacked around 57 images. I need to find some way to make the whole process systematic and coherent as much as possible.... or maybe just get another microscope 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thought I'd do a quick re-#introduction since I just moved under this beautiful rock. Let's see what life is like in a smaller place.

I feel right at home, because I'm mostly tooting and boosting about #inaturalist #entomology #microscopy #wildlife #mothing
But that's very on-and-off, call it seasonal maybe.
I also have a long running project trying to CNC-automate my #microscope. Image processing (stacking/stitching) is in place.

I might also comment or toot about a bazillion other things, anything from computer security to tree felling.

I live in Norway, where we build routers at Celerway.

On August 13 President #Biden toured #cancer #research #facilities at Tulane University in New Orleans and deemed the developments "incredible."

Why it matters:
⭐️He announced about $150 million in federal awards during the visit as part of his #cancer "#moonshot" initiative that aims to ❇️cut the cancer death rate in half by 2047. ❇️

The big picture:

"We are the land of possibilities," the president said, adding that the funding will help get new tools into operating rooms.

Nearly 2 million Americans are diagnosed with solid tumor cancers each year, and #surgical #removal is often the first step in their treatment, the White House said.

Tulane is getting $22.9 million to invent 💥new imaging systems that will allow surgeons to see in real time if they removed all cancer cells while their patients are still under anesthesia.
It currently can take days to weeks for doctors to know if all of a tumor has been removed, according to J. Quincy Brown, the lead researcher on Tulane's project called MAGIC-SCAN.
💥The goal is to get that down to 10 minutes within the next five years, he said.

Zoom out:
Seven other teams are working on additional developments geared at making #tumor-#removal #surgeries more successful.

The awardees are
Dartmouth College,
Johns Hopkins University,
Rice University,
University of California in San Francisco,
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign,
University of Washington and
Cision Vision in California.

Their projects include inventing a #new #microscope and creating #new #imaging #systems to visualize blood vessels and nerves
