It truly was a pleasure - and fun! - to do some outreach today via being invited to have a table at a middle school career day...The area of town and being near a military base means there was a wonderful variety of students...
I took 'surplus' (!!) maps and the students who were inclined chose a map they liked and a spot on that map - and together we cut out that place into a circle and used a button maker to make them a pinnable map...
There was some time - if the student was open to the idea - of talking about the maps and spatial data behind them as we made the button - be it a coastal Oregon topo map button, an Indonesian geology map button, a US/Mexico demographics map button, a San Fran earthquake map button, and many more...
