‘Listen to the people’: Thousands demonstrate across #Maine for national day of action against #Trump

#Mainers rallied in over 20 towns against mass firings and cuts to federal programs

By: Lauren McCauley - April 5, 2025

"'The power of the people is more important and stronger than the people in power.'

"That was what U.S. Sen. Angus King told the thousands of people who gathered on Congress Street in Portland on Saturday to protest the administration of President Donald Trump. [#UselessSusanCollins wasn't there. Nothing new...]

"According to organizers, 3,000 people attended the #PortlandME rally, which was just one of more than 20 events held across Maine as part of national '#HandsOff!' actions to demonstrate widespread opposition to the gutting of the federal government spearheaded by billionaire advisor #ElonMusk.

"The town mall in #BrunswickME, where over 500 people rallied, was a sea of homemade signs. Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry, who represents the district, was among the crowd and noted it was one of the few times in her life she’s seen 'this many people gathered for something like this.'

"The message, she said, is 'to listen to the people.'

"'A lot of the signs that I saw were about ‘Hands off our Social Security,’ ‘Hands off our libraries,’ ‘Hands off our health care,’ I think what we’re saying is, you can’t completely unravel the fabric of our society without people noticing.'"

Live updates: #Mainers rally across the state to protest #Trump policies

On Saturday, more than a dozen '#HandsOff' rallies were set to be held throughout Maine as part of a national day of action targeting the new Trump administration.

"On Saturday, more than a dozen rallies were set to be held throughout Maine as part of a national day of action to protest the policies of President Donald Trump.
The “Hands Off” rallies were scheduled from #WellsME to as far north as #LubecME. In Portland, protesters gathered in Monument Square at 11 a.m., while one of the day’s first protests began in Freeport just after 8 a.m.

"Portland police said they were aware of the Monument Square demonstration in advance and would 'be giving it special attention as we do all protests that we are aware of within the city,' department spokesperson Brad Nadeau said in an email Friday afternoon.

"Saturday’s protests were focused on President Donald Trump and billionaire adviser #ElonMusk’s efforts to cut the federal workforce through mass firings, rumored threats to safety-net programs like Social Security and Medicaid, and heightened action by immigration officers as part of a massive deportation effort.

"Though Saturday’s demonstrations were expected to be relatively large, Mainers have been taking to the streets for weeks. In addition to those protesting the federal government’s policies, hundreds have also called for Maine Gov. #JanetMills to relent following her high-profile clash with Trump."

#TaxTheRich, it’s a decent start

Posted by Bluebird | Mar 12, 2025

"As incredible as it may seem, just a handful of #billionaire #Mainers could fund the state for years out of their own pockets and still live out their lives as multimillionaires. So when socialists say tax the rich, we mean more than raising what billionaires pay by 1% or 2%, we mean raising their taxes by 25% or 50% or more to start with. We mean we should take back the wealth they have collected by exploiting all the people who have worked for them, all the land they have stolen, and all the resources they have grabbed all around the world. In the meantime, socialists often support smaller measures whenever we feel like they are a way to raise funds to help our class, raise consciousness, and build organization.

However, increasing taxes on the wealthy isn’t a permanent solution to the persisting problems of #capitalist society. It’s a good start, but it’s not enough.

[...]

"By all means tax [the wealthy] at a rate of 95%, 99%, 100%, 200%! Take back everything they have stolen from us. Truly solving the causes of social inequality cannot happen until the property of the capitalist class has been expropriated, but for the reasons explained above, simply taxing them at any rate will prove ineffective given enough time.

"Moreover, tax increases tend to antagonize capitalists. Sooner or later, as we are seeing very clearly now in Washington, they will transform their economic might into raw political power to claw back even the small social costs that generations of #SocialMovements and trade unions have imposed on them. During such times, as grim as our prospects may seem, it becomes clearer than ever that so long as the capitalists have all the power, even the most progressive public policy can only be temporary.

"How much longer will capitalist industry be allowed to #pollute the planet? How many more times does the economy have to crash? How many more wars will we be forced to fight on the behalf of these #RobberBarons? How many more lives will be ruined by #debts, mass #layoffs, denied insurance claims, and more? Why should we tolerate a system that exploits those whose labor keeps society functioning?"

#Mainers call on legislature to fund #education and more by raising taxes on #wealthy

by Channa Steinmetz, March 27, 2025

"As the #Trump Administration continues its efforts to fund huge #billionaire tax cuts by raising the cost of living and making it harder for Americans to access health care, housing, food assistance and education, Mainers, including some with very high incomes, are calling for the state’s wealthiest residents to pay what they truly owe our state.

"#LD1089, 'An Act to Permanently Fund 55 Percent of the State’s Share of Education by Establishing a Tax on Incomes of More than $1,000,000,' would add a 4% income tax surcharge on the fewer than 1% of Mainers whose incomes are above $1 million to fund Maine’s public schools. Currently, #millionaires pay the same percentage of their income in taxes as someone who makes $61,000 – leaving more than $100 million a year (the amount this tax would raise) on the table.

"Bill sponsor Rep. Cheryl Golek (D-Harpswell) said that while the bill would benefit many Mainers, 'adding a modest surcharge has no impact on millionaires.'

"#LD1047, 'An Act to Impose an Additional Tax on Certain Unearned Income', adds a 4% surcharge on capital gains above $250,000 for an individual or $500,000 for a couple filing jointly.

"Since #InvestmentIncome is often taxed at a lower rate than wages, and people with more wealth tend to get more of their income from investments (such as stocks or real estate), this bill helps to address the disparity in tax rates between people with more and less wealth. It would affect only the wealthiest investors, not middle-class families selling homes or withdrawing retirement savings, while raising over $100 million to support #schools, #infrastructure, and community services, said bill sponsor Rep. Grayson Lookner (D-Portland).

"Lucas St. Clair, an immensely wealthy Falmouth resident best known for his work on the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, testified in favor of both bills. He said that people with money, like his family, should pay more in taxes: 'We care about the future of this state. The inequitable tax structure of today…undermines the overall health of our communities. The wealthy should pay our fair share in taxes. Period.' He also spoke about the results of fairer tax policies: 'Fair tax policies allow more money to stay in communities, ensuring greater investment in public schools, infrastructure, and services like child care and health care.'

"Gorham child care provider Charlotte Jacobs of Scarborough testified in person in favor of both tax bills, saying that Maine’s continued failure to fully fund universal Pre-K and other essential services is a direct consequence of an unbalanced tax system."

#PortlandMaine: Weekly protests, Saturdays at 11am! #MonumentSquare (alternate site, City Hall)

#Protesters rallied at 16 #demonstrations across #Maine

by Carol Bousquet, Maine Public March 2, 2025

"Protesters rallied at 16 statewide demonstrations this weekend called #MarchEndTheMadness.

"Hundreds filled #MonumentSquare in #PortlandME Saturday to speak out about the #Trump Administration’s actions that have harmed #Mainers, including #farmers and #FederalWorkers.

"The protesters said they are calling for the restoration of checks and balances, the rule of law, and equity for all under the law.

"Steve Titcomb of Falmouth said he worries about the security of our country and that of our allies with Trump in charge.

"'The president has taken the side of #Russia and #Putin and is turning his back on decades of security for Europe and NATO,' Titcomb said.

"Susan Hanley of Orr’s Island said she’s disgusted with how President Trump treated #Ukrainian President Volodymyr #Zelenskyy Friday at the White House and said his administration is not working for Americans.

"'It’s not about ‘We the People’ for them. It’s about #greed and #money and #power,' Hanley said.

"The #16CountiesForCourage marches were organized by #IndivisiblePortland, #IndivisibleBangor and other advocacy groups.

"Earlier in the day about a hundred protesters gathered at Portland City Hall to speak out against the Trump Administration’s sweeping measures to downsize the federal government workforce.

"Angus Ferguson organizes a protest called 'Every Saturday at 11 am in Monument Square' that has been gathering for several weeks but met at City Hall because of multiple protests across the city. He said the Trump Administration is ignoring the U.S. Constitution and turning it upside down.

"'We’re protesting Donald Trump, #Musk and the #MAGA movement’s destruction of the U.S. Constitution, firing federal workers, decimating federal agencies,' Ferguson said.

"Ferguson, who is an attorney, said the President is literally 'executing' or destroying the law with his actions."

My neighbor and I had a long talk about food insecurity with whatever is coming our way (something wicked this way comes). She and I are going to do some exploration of our shared forest, and I'm looking into what is needed to start up the nearby community garden again (I'm hoping to establish a permaculture-based food forest centered around an established apple tree). I'm also going to see if the local library would host a seed-bank, since I have a lot to share...

Juniper Ridge Landfill is one step closer to expanding
Maine Public | By Kaitlyn Budion

Published September 20, 2024 at 1:22 PM EDT

"#Environmental groups are concerned about a draft decision from the Department of Environmental Protection that brings #JuniperRidgeLandfill in #OldTown one step closer to expanding.

"The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued a draft decision approving the expansion's public benefit determination, despite opposition from the #PenobscotNation, area residents and #EnvironmentalGroups.

"Opponents have brought up concerns about odors and contamination from the #PFAS-filled sludge at the #landfill.

"Alexandra St. Pierre with the #ConservationLawFoundation said the group was disappointed by the draft approval and wants the department to give greater weight to comments from the public.

"'We're hoping that Maine DEP will stop making this unnecessary space for waste and make more space for people's voices and the real needs of the community,' she said.

"In the draft, the department outlines several conditions of the approval, including conducting an odor study and installing a system for treating landfill leachate for PFAS.

"Dana Colihan with the environmental nonprofit Slingshot said it's insulting for the DEP to say the expansion is consistent with #EnvironmentalJustice for the surrounding community.

'"When we think about the odors, the #AirPollution, the #contamination of the #PenobscotRiver from the minimally treated leachate, and how all these factors threaten the Penobscot Nation and working-class #Mainers living and the surrounding communities, I can't fathom how the state can argue that this fulfills the required environmental justice criteria,' Colihan said.

"The draft is available for public comment until Friday, Sept. 27, and the DEP is expected to publish the final decision Wednesday, Oct. 2."

[Paywall - article copied in contents] Negative response to first #WindhamMaine #Pride event prompts #DragQueens to cancel performance

#Drag Queen #ChartreuseMoney said a man she didn't know told her that attending the event would put her life at risk. Organizers say it's just one example of the pushback they've received.

by Rachel Ohm, May 31, 2024

"A group of drag queens that was scheduled to perform at a Pride celebration in Windham this weekend has dropped out of the event after community pushback and a threatening encounter prompted the performers to question their safety.

"'Unfortunately, because people in the town haven’t been standing up and being vocal enough in fighting this #hate against #queer people and people in drag, there’s just been this community of hate that has truly terrorized us,' said Chartreuse Money, one of the drag queens who had been scheduled to perform Sunday.

"Money, who asked to be identified by her stage name because of safety concerns, said she was approached by a man she didn’t know in a bar in #PortlandMaine last week and was told not to attend the event because her life would be in danger. She said the encounter shook her and was a key reason she and other drag queens dropped out of the #TogetherWeRise event.

"It’s the first Pride celebration to be held in the town and came about in response to a contentious debate in the school district last year about whether #books with queer storylines and characters should be allowed in classrooms.

"And while the overall response has been positive, there has been pushback from a small number of people, said Kate Turpen, board president of Windham & Raymond Pride, which is organizing the event.
'There’s a lane of amazing support that I’m so grateful for, and then there’s a lane of threats and closed-mindedness,' Turpen said. 'Due to the #ClosedMindedness and use of social media with reckless abandon from some of our neighbors, we don’t have the privilege of having a drag show anymore.' But the festival will go on, Turpen said.

"The cancellation of the drag show is just the latest example of the negative response some communities have seen as Pride events in Maine and elsewhere have grown in popularity. Protesters showed up at an inaugural Pride event in #GorhamMaine last year and residents in #UnityMaine circulated a petition trying to ban Pride decorations on town property.

"A record amount of legislation attacking LGBTQ+ rights has advanced in recent years, according to the American Civil Liberties Union [#ACLU], and the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a warning of potential violence last month in advance of Pride Month activities.

"#GiaDrew, executive director of #EqualityMaine, an organization dedicated to education and outreach in support of LGBTQ+ people, said there are more than 31 Pride events scheduled in Maine in June during Pride month.

"'That’s wonderful and I think it’s a wonderful show of support for the #LGBTQ community, especially in light of some of the national pushback on our community and some of the pushback our community has faced here in Maine,' Drew said. 'But with that comes some safety considerations. We definitely know last year there were some really targeted attacks and push back and hurtful language.'

‘I NEEDED TO IMMEDIATELY GET OUT’

"Money said she was in a bar in Portland after a performance last week when a man she didn’t know approached her and asked if she was planning to perform at the upcoming Pride event in Windham. The man leaned in close and told her not to go to the event, Money said. He said he couldn’t say anything more than that there was a threat and that Money’s life would be in danger if she went.

"Not long before she left, Money said she was shaken by the exchange and noticed the man was lingering outside. She felt him stare at her from his truck before he drove off.

"'I didn’t know if he was warning me of the threat or if he was an active threat,' Money said. 'I needed to immediately get out of the bar.'

"She said she called police in Portland and Windham when she got home and the next day got in touch with the organizers of the event. She also reported the incident to the FBI.
Windham police Chief Kevin Schofield said Thursday that his department was able to identify the man who approached Money and he did not appear to have any information about a specific threat.

"'The statements were made in the context of there’s most likely going to be some protesters and there were some opposing comments made on social media, not in the context of any direct knowledge or inside information that someone is going to be targeted,' Schofield said.

"Schofield said police also have been made aware of 'some opposing views and comments' being made about the event on Facebook, but 'nothing we would call a direct threat to any specific individual.'

"He said police have been working with organizers for months and will be at Sunday’s event.
“Our goal is to be prepared and facilitate a safe event for all attendees,” Schofield said.

DECISION TO DROP OUT

"Money said the threatening exchange along with other pushback and issues related to the event factored into the drag queens’ collective decision to call off their show. 'We decided the best way we could go forward with having Pride in Windham and being safe, was to have the performances cease and not happen anymore,' Money said.

"Money said the drag queens and organizers had a meeting on Zoom Wednesday. One performer brought up a social media post about a man saying he was planning to make shirts to impersonate event volunteers. And Money said she was concerned about some aspects of how the town of Windham responded to the event, which is being held on town property though the town was not involved in organizing it.

"She said that after some people started criticizing the event, the town asked the drag queens to sign #LiabilityWaivers saying they wouldn’t hold the town liable if they were hurt or injured during the event. Money said that seemed unusual.

"A spokesperson for the town of Windham said officials were not available Thursday afternoon to answer questions about the event, including the reason for the liability form and if it is standard, and whether the town has a position on the event.

"Turpen, the Windham & Raymond Pride president, said that what happened to Money was just one example of some of the pushback organizers have gotten. They’ve had to rethink their volunteer strategy because of the concerns about someone trying to impersonate volunteers. There have also been calls for people to speak out about the event at town council meetings, Turpen said.
'It’s disappointing to me that a vocal minority is influencing the perception of this opportunity for our residents,' Turpen said.

"The reaction and the decision for the drag queens to drop out of the event also has disappointed some residents and officials.

"'To have the intimidation and #bullying kind of shut down part of it, it’s just a shame,' said Jarrod Maxfield, a town councilor. 'I don’t think that should go unanswered or that we shouldn’t let the public know. I think the public should know. We want to encourage people to come despite that bullying and intimidation. The show – at least part of it – is still going to go on.'

"Drew, from EqualityMaine, said her group works with communities and organizations on event planning and how to be safe. She also encouraged people who are the target of threats or bias to reach out to police, or if they don’t feel comfortable doing so themselves, to reach out to #EqualityMaine to advocate on their behalf.

"Drew said the majority of Mainers are understanding of what it means to be LGBTQ+ but there is still work to be done.

"'I do think some of the misinformation or stereotypes or lack of familiarity is raised in some of the rhetoric we’re hearing,' she said. 'That’s definitely part of our work (to address that) ... but I do believe we’re making progress and I think most #Mainers support #LGBTQ+ people.'"

So, what's going on with the #GorhamSpur seems a lot like what happened with the #CMPCorridor (which #Mainers voted against). Despite public opposition, #MTA will say, "Oh, well we already bought most of the land, so we have to keep going!" The same tactic was used with the CMP corridor through the North Woods, when CMP said, "Well, we already started the project -- we plan on completing if, even if the public opposes it!"

Opinion: #GorhamConnector plan threatens river #Ecosystem, #HeritageTrout

Building a new road along the banks of #RedBrook will render barren a unique stretch of riparian #shoreline – with all the adverse consequences you might expect.

by C. Ian Stevenson
February 27, 2024

"While proponents tout the toll-road Gorham Connector as promising to shorten commutes and relieve traffic pressure in #GreaterPortlandMaine, there has already been substantial pushback to the concept. Regardless of how much (or for how long) travel-based advantage the new roadway might bring, as proposed it will have pronounced, unambiguously negative effects to the area.

"Maine is known for its sense of place. Many components contribute to what makes the state unique and desirable. Among these is the built environment, such as the 13th-generation Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook, which the proposed route threatens to erode, if not entirely extinguish, as an economically viable vestige of Maine’s once robust agricultural heritage. Others have amply sounded the alarm about this issue.

"But the route introduces other threats to the more naturalistic landscape. Starting at #SmilingHillFarm and running south-southeasterly to I-295 is a five-mile section of Red Brook that mostly nestles in #DenseForest. Between County Road and Running Hill Road, in particular, Red Brook occupies one of the few contiguous #undeveloped #Riverine stretches in #SouthernMaine. While unassuming in scale, Red Brook is nevertheless remarkable for supporting one of the last remaining native populations of #BrookTrout in this part of the state.

"The proposed road will immediately abut the river, sitting nearly on its banks, for as much as a mile south of the County Road Interchange. This will degrade habitat, destroying the trees whose overhanging foliage provides shade and cooling effects for these temperature-sensitive fish and creates shelter from predators. It will make barren riparian shoreline that supports the aquatic and terrestrial insects that provide the primary trout food sources. The road itself will also contribute oil, salt and other #runoff to the river, #polluting the water. As a result of these factors, this connector will likely #exterminate this population of brook trout.

"Why should we care about a small river and its brook trout? Although this is not the official state fish, the fishing community widely considers it the prize species to catch, with so-called wild populations assuming even more cherished status. Brook trout provide a link across generations and cultural traditions and belong to everyone. Human inhabitants of Maine – from the original #Wabanaki to European colonists to modern Americans – have been catching these 'native' fish for millennia. Other parts of Maine, especially further north and west, have healthy native brook trout fisheries, making Maine highly regarded nationally as a destination to catch them.

"The fact that Red Brook, in the heart of #GreaterPortland, belongs to this orbit is no small feat. Most of the area’s waterways have already succumbed to habitat loss, development, predatory introduced species, warming temperatures and increased flooding due to #ClimateChange. Red Brook provides an opportunity for future #Mainers who might not have access to brook trout streams further afield to enjoy this natural amenity. Even if you do not care about fishing, this road promises to annihilate a population of one of our state’s heritage species, as well as its scenic habitat that also contributes to #Maine’s sense of place.

"#PeterMills, the executive director of the #MaineTurnpikeAuthority, claims his organization has 'gone to great lengths to minimize impacts to Red Brook,' but clearly it hasn’t gone far enough under the current proposal. There are yet solutions.

"Citizens can express concerns at a hearing planned for March or via the Maine Turnpike Authority’s online portal. If the connector is to be built, planners need to re-route to establish a buffer zone between the connector and river – even a few hundred feet would have a positive impact. While less ideal than a complete reworking of the route, this would at least retain the primary shoreline flora and fauna and allow for run-off infrastructure. And we could re-route the road to save Smiling Hill Farm at the same time. Or better yet, we could re-consider the whole project’s merit entirely."
