This Is My Glasgow<p>A fragment of the old Monkland Canal passing under Castle Street in Glasgow. Designed by James Watt, this canal was completed in 1794 and was built to bring coal into Glasgow. Most of it was filled in when the M8 was built in the 1970s. This Is My Glasgow<p>Only the northern half, which resulted in the destruction of a large number of buildings and long-lasting damage to communities like Anderston, was ever completed, and by 1980 plans to construct the southern section were officially abandoned. This left structures like the ski-jump, and various Bridges to Nowhere, stranded and simply ending in mid-air. This Is My Glasgow<p>Known locally as the ski-jump, this is part of Glasgow's notoriously unfinished, and now abandoned, inner ring road project. This Is My Glasgow<p>The bodies were dug up and the dead were re-interred in Linn Cemetery, about as far away as you could get from Anderston and still remain within the city. Only two of the grave monunents were also moved. This Is My Glasgow<p>In the 1960s, Glasgow Corporation set about constructing the Kingston Bridge to carry the new M8 motorway over Clyde (top photo and map). To clear the way for it, much of the centre of Anderston was obliterated. This Is My Glasgow<p>Why is a private company being alllowed to fence off the Kingston DIY Skatepark under the M8 in the Kingston area of Glasgow (top left picture). This is a public area which provides a much needed local amenity and it's by far the best kept area under the M8 in the local vicinity (the other pictures). This Is My Glasgow<p>A recent post on Twitter by Govanhill Go! reminded me of the concept of desire lines. These are unofficial paths, like the one on the right in this photo, worn into the landscape by people who would rather use them than the official routes (like the one on the left).
